Upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has given us our first look at the returning Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. The reveal ends months of speculation following the news that Mulgrew would be returning for the Nickelodeon Trek-based series.
During the First Contact Day celebrations, remembering when Vulcans first arrived on Earth on April 5, 2063, it was confirmed that Mulgrew will appear as a holographic version of Janeway, still in her Captaincy.
An updated synopsis for Prodigy reads:
[Prodigy] will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.
Mulgrew will appear as a built-in “Emergency Training Hologram” on the ship commandeered by the series’ main cast. The series itself is set in 2383, after the events of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Nemesis, and will be set in the Delta Quadrant. Presumably Janeway, as Starfleet’s foremost expert on the Delta Quadrant, has been programmed in to explorative ships to help them on their way.
Here’s a look at the Janeway key art released last night as part of the reveal:
Developed by Emmy Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago) and overseen for Nickelodeon by Naito, Star Trek: Prodigy follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.
Star Trek: Prodigy is set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021.
