    Synopsis

Across the vast Multiverse, those gifted with a “spark” can tap into the raw power of Magic and travel across realms — they are Planeswalkers. When coordinated assassination attempts on Guildmasters Ral Zarek, Vraska and Kaya rock the city of Ravnica and leave Jace Belleren’s life hanging in the balance, a fuse is lit that threatens not just these three Guilds, but the entire plane of Ravnica. Now these three must covertly infiltrate the wild plane of Zendikar and form a tenuous alliance to uncover why the targets of the assassins have all been Planeswalkers which will lead them straight to one of the most enigmatic characters in Magic history!

    Review

BOOM! Studios has bought the legendary card game franchise to comic book form with a new series of comics straight from the multiverse of MTG (Magic The Gathering). Being a fan of the game in my younger years I was quite keen to get into the comic and see how writer Jed Mackay could portray the MTG world.

We begin the book with an introduction to the multiverse and how it is split into planes focusing on one in particular which is Ravnica, which is described as a place of rumbling peace run by 10 different factions held together by The Guildpact overseen by Niv-Mizzet, The Gearwork dragon. We are introduced to the Planeswalkers, the people who inhabit these planes, or more notably the Guildmasters who are tasked with keeping this pact together, Kaya the ghost assassin, Ral Zarek the stormheart and lastly we meet Vraska the Queen of the downtrodden all with their unique powers helping defend and protect their home.

All seems quiet and at ease until a strange explosion occurs bringing with it assassins to attempt to take down the Guildmasters in a calculated attack. This takes the story up a notch in terms of action as we see the battle take place on the pages before us as we see the introduction of another character in the form of the mind mage Jace Beleren all gearing up for a great cliffhanger ending that’s definitely left me wanting more.

The book is a great introduction into a what looks like to be an action packed series in the MTG multiverse, I’m personally looking forward to reading the next installment to see if this is a fight that is going to escalate into an all out war.

Mackay has done a great job in bringing the world of MTG alive through comic media with a captivating story helped by the beautiful artwork by legendary comic book artist Ig Iguara (Marvel, DC) using dark, dramatic colours that really draw you in and make you feel part of the world you are reading, the dramatic art really captures the action unfolding on the page drawing you into the story.

    Verdict

Great read, captivating story left wanting more, looking forward to see how the story unfolds from here.

    8/10

Magic #1 is available April 7th, the story will continue in #2 available May 2021.
