One of the most popular anime of our time is soon to be back on our small screens!
After a critically acclaimed first season and a groundbreaking cinematic run in overseas theatres with Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, it was confirmed today that Demon Slayer will air its second season during 2021, so we could see an Autumn or Winter release. With this announcement we also got a key visual and a short teaser trailer.
Demon Slayer is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge, and follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy whose sister Nezuko has transformed into a demon, so they, alongside friends and allies, set off on a mission to turn her back into a human and killing any evil demons who stand in their way.
Following its anime debut it garnered mass popularity and has now become one of the best-selling manga of all time, with over 120 million copies in circulation as of December 2020.
Demon Slayer aired its first anime season produced by Ufotable from April to September 2019, and the previously mentioned sequel film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train premiered in Japanese theatres in October 2020 and has now become the highest-grossing anime film of all time. So, it seemed only a matter of time until the second season would be announced!
The teaser trailer gives us small glimpses of the upcoming arc that will kickstart season 2. We left off season 1 with our characters about to board the train that leads them into the movie, so we can only hope that for us audiences who have not had the film release yet will see it so as to avoid spoilers going into the next installment.
The teaser shows us mysterious rooms and buildings in a lively and colourful city, as well as characters that we have not yet seen, so we could be anticipating future allies, and even more villains! Our main focus is on the character Tengen Uzui, the character seen in the key visual, who looks to be the next mentor in our protagonist’s story. We briefly saw this character during final episodes of season 1, as a member of a group of demon slayer’s known as the ‘Hashira’, the strongest fighters in their ranks.
It looks like the anime will show us more of these Hashira, with the movie focusing on the character Rengoku Kyoujirou and now season 2 focusing on Tengen Uzui, who will taking our protagonists on yet another mission that will provide our heroes with more threats, as well as the animation studio Ufotable having a chance to once again show us seamless animation with more colourful and exciting fight sequences.
Could we also end up seeing yet another internet-breaking moment like what we saw with episode 19 of season 1, which was an almost inescapable fight sequence that is still talked about amongst anime viewers nearly two years after the episode aired… We can only hope!
