Following the reveal that The Suicide Squad would be hitting the cover of Empire Magainze, we now have two more stills and snippets of the interview with director James Gunn.

The two stills feature members of the team as they are preparing to head in to battle. The first shows Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Peacemaker (Jon Cena), Bloodsport (Idris Elba) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) in what appears to be the woods glimpsed in the film’s behind-the-scenes featurette.

The second image shows many more of the group, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg, as the team flies in to their mission.

The interview snippets focus on how Gunn’s film will tie (or not) in to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. When asked directly about the connection between the two film’s Ayer says “Um, it’s its own thing,”

He goes on to say “It does not contradict the first movie, I don’t think. It might in some small ways… I don’t know…”

But whilst his film isn’t beholden to what came before Ayer still has plenty of praise for his predecessor in the directors chair.

“Listen, David Ayer’s gotten trouble for the movie,” he says. “I know it didn’t come out how David wanted it to come out. But he did one really, really great thing, and that is he picked fantastic actors to work with, and he dealt with these actors in building their characters in a really deep and fearless way. It’s something David definitely deserves to be lauded for, and it’s definitely added to this movie.”

You can read more of Gunn’s interview and catch plenty more images from the film when Empire Magazine hits news stands on October 29.

Returning from Suicide Squad are Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang).

Officially joining them are David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Joaquin Cosio, Nathan Fillion, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi,, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchoir, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Idris Elba and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad is due for release on August 6, 2021 release date.
