    HORIZON ZERO DAWN #1 review

With a sequel in development, fans of Horizon Zero Dawn will be able to dive back into the stunning 31st century with this brand new comic book. Written by Anne Toole and illustrated by Ann Maulina, Horizon Zero Dawn is set after the events of the first game but before the upcoming sequel- Horizon Forbidden West.

While Aloy is the protagonist of the main game, this comic book series centers on Talanah. It has been a while since the game came out so let us refresh your memory. Talanah is an ally in the original game. She is also a Hawk and, later, a Sunhawk. The Hawks in the Carja tribe are essentially hunters. However, if one of the Hawks kills, what is considered, the most deadliest machine will attain the title of Sunhawk. Through multiple missions, Aloy helps Talanah in her quest to become a Sunhawk.

Now, after helping Aloy fend off against the hoard of corrupted machines and the calculative HADES, Talanah struggles to find a new purpose when her friend disappears. However, while worrying about Aloy’s whereabouts, a new threat emerges in the wild. When Talanah returns to her roots as a hunter, she discovers that a new breed of machine now stalks the land.

Talanah and Alloy sharing the spotlight

The first issue will be released on August 5th. If you’re a fan of the original game then we guarantee that this is a must-read. Returning back to the world of Horizon Zero Dawn was an absolute treat. While Aloy isn’t the center of attention, the hunting aspect of this world has always been very interesting. It is also great to see a different character take the spotlight.

We’ll be honest, we had a hard time remembering some of the events that transpired in the game. However, the first issue does a great job of recapping. What is really cool about this spin off is that is continues on from the quests in the game. You help Talanah achieve her dream but now that dream is thrown into doubt when Talanah grows restless with her new position. We now follow Talanah as she tries to deal with her unease.

Things go a tad wrong when Talanah is visited by an old enemy- Clawstriders. We get a brand new look at a new machine in this comic and they look fantastic. They resemble Velociraptors which means they are just as fast and even more deadly with their metal claws and razors. This first issue teases a new mystery concerning the Clawstriders and it will be exciting to see how that is developed- especially since it throws Aloy back into the mix. So what does Aloy have to do with these new dangerous breed of machine? We’ll have to wait until the next issue.

Check out the video game-esque cover for Issue 1:

Issue 1 is a great introduction to a new chapter in the Horizon Zero Dawn franchise. The artwork is incredibly clean and vibrant, the new story is very promising and we are hoping that is somehow feeds into what we can expect from the next game. For all of you Horizon Zero Dawn fans out there, you are not going to want to miss this new chapter. This new series promises fun, mystery and some brand new machines. What’s not to love.

Issue 2 will be available in September 2020. Make sure you pick up issue 1 when it goes on sale August 5th. Be sure to check out a preview here.
