After two weeks reigning at the top of the worldwide box office, Joker has been dethroned by Disney’s latest release, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Joker took a further $29.2m at the domestic box office, falling short of the Angelina Jolie sequel’s $36m. Joker now boasts a huge $247m domestic total and edges ever closer to the $300m milestone.
Internationally the Todd Phillips film brought in another $77.8m for an overseas total in the region of $490m and a worldwide total that now stands at $737.5m bringing it close to the record for highest grossing R-rated film. That record is currently held by Deadpool 2 which grossed $785m.
Disney has plenty of cause to celebrate as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil lands an impressive international weekend with $117m. The film opened in all major markets and, according to BoxOfficeMojo, took an estimated $22.4m opening in China followed by Russia ($10.7m), Mexico ($7.8m), Indonesia ($4.8m), Italy ($4.7m), Korea ($4.6m), Brazil ($4.5m), UK ($4.3m), France ($3.9m), Thailand ($3.7m), Philippines ($3.5m), Germany ($3.4m) and Spain ($3.2m).
Despite taking the top spot at the domestic box office, Mistress of Evil dropped significantly from the $69.4m the original film opened with in 2014. Globally the film has opened with takings of $153m.
Todd Phillips directs Joker from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver, based on characters from DC.
