Exploring the TITANS season 2 trailer

In case you missed it, yesterday DC Comics released the first trailer for Titans season 2. The 54 second tease is packed with footage and includes our first glimpses of a whole host of new characters.

Before we start why not check out the trailer again in the player below:

    Return To Wayne Manor

The trailer opens with Dick (Brenton Thwaites) taking a trip back to Wayne Manor. Though we don’t know why he’s there it does give us our first look at Game of Thrones Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne.

Apart from the shock of seeing a blonde Bruce it’s his line of dialogue which is crucial here: “I see you made the news with your old Titans friends, some new ones too.”

This scene is definitely taking place in the present day and follows the closing of the season 1 storyline with Trigon. We’re guessing that following his experience of being controlled by Trigon, Dick will feel like it’s time to move on from his feud with Bruce and try to rebuild bridges.

From the looks of this scene the two are trying but Dick still looks troubled by his old mentor.

    “Titans are back b*tches!”

Speaking of that battle with Trigon: could this scene take place right after the battle is over? The house looks familiar but the surroundings don’t quite look the same as the house we saw in the closing episodes of season 1.

It looks as though the battle with Trigon may spill out in the surrounding area and will certainly catch the attention of the local media. One thing we don’t recommend is putting Jason Todd (Curran Walters) in front of the camera though.

His line, “Titans are back b*tches!” has definitely become a hit with fans.

If we had to call what this scene is symbolising then we think that having all the team together for that battle with Trigon will cement them as a team and push the narrative forwards for season 2. Jason is clearly on cloud nine here and hoping to be part of Titans: The Next Generation.

    Costume Reveals

Fans were disappointed not to see Donna Troy in her Wonder Girl costume back in season one. Following the wrap up of the season photos of Conor Leslie in costume did leak online giving us hope we would one day see her in the classic red outfit.

This trailer wastes no time in giving us that costume. There are a number of shots in which we see her wearing the outfit, two candid shots posing in what appears to be a costume case in Titans Tower and other footage which we believe to be from flashback scenes.

She is seen alongside Garth/Aqualad (Drew Van Acker) and the original Titans lineup.

This is also the first time we’ve seen Acker in his Aqualad costume. It’s a mix between an Aquaman inspired update of his classic suit and the Temptest costume he grows up to wear in the comics.

We only get brief glimpses of his character here so there’s not much to go on. But we’re intrigued to know if he will also turn up in the present day.

    Robin vs. Robin

Now here’S a scene which has us really intrigued. As you can see from the image above this scene features both Robins – Jason and Dick – throwing down in the Batcave.

Dick is wearing the Robin costume which is throwing us off trying to place this scene. But it’s clear to see behind them that the Batcave has partially collapsed. Could this be set inside Dick’s mind as the team try to free him from Trigon?

It could explain the destruction and why Dick is back in his old costume. There’s no footage of him in the suit which explicitly places it in the present day.

If I were to guess then episode one will be heavily tied to freeing Dick before moving on to fight Trigon.

    Returning Titans

There’S also plenty to see in the trailer from the other returning characters. There are only brief glimpses of Dawn (Minka Kelly), Hawk (Alan Ritchson, Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) whilst we see a lot more of Anna Diop’s Starfire.

We’re guessing the scene above is from the first episode due to Diop having Kory’s season 1 hair and appears to be wearing the costume she had in the final episode. This is most likely as she fights Trigon and/or the brainwashed Dick Grayson.

Scattered throughout the trailer are shots of her with her longer, straight hair which forms part of her new, updated look. There’s a particularly interesting scene, glimpsed below, with Kory alongside Wonder Girl. The two appeared to be locked in a street brawl with someone who looks suspiciously like Kory in her old wig.

Though it’s difficult to tell as the shot is blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, we see Kory knocking down a foe who appears in be wearing purple and has very bright hair. Could this be the long-rumoured appearance by Blackfire?

    Superboy (and Krypto)

The trailer finally gives us our first official look at Joshua Orpin as Superboy. Fans will remember we glimpsed the character from afar in the stinger scene of season 1 when we took a short visit to a Project Cadmus.

At the time those scene were filmed Orpin had yet to be cast. Now we get to see him wearing the trademark black and red t-shirt emblazoned with the Superman logo. We have to admit his casting, at least physically, is spot on.

The trailer also brings as a new look at Krypto. We also saw Conner’s canine pal in the season 1 stinger. Here we see he’s wearing a dog tag with his name and get a brief glimpse of the pairs relationship.

It’s a sweet moment amongst the chaos of everything else in the trailer. But we are yet to understand when Conner will meet up with the rest of the team.

Recent set photos have sown Joshua Orpin filming scenes with Ryan Potter so we at least know that Beast Boy and Superboy will come into contact at some point.

    Ravager & Jericho

The trailer doesn’t just give us our first look at Deathstroke (see below), it also gives us our first glimpses of Jericho (Chella Man – above) and Ravager (Chelsea Zhang – below).

Jericho was originally a hero and member of the Titans during the Marv Wolfman and George Perez era. He was introduced in Tales of the Teen Titans #43 in June 1984 as an entirely new character to help separate the Teen Titans from the Justice League. It was Perez who suggested the character be a mute alongside deciding on his powerset.

Real name Joseph, he is the youngest son of Slade Wilson. He can possess a person after making eye contact with them; his body turns insubstantial and enters the subject. This renders him able to use their voice to communicate.

There have been five characters named Ravager in the DC Universe. We believe this to be the Rose Wilson incarnation who first appeared in Deathstroke #15 in October 1992.

She was created again by Marc Wolfman but this time alongside Art Nichols. She has precognitive abilities to see in to the future and possesses chemically augmented strength, speed and stamina plus heightened agility and intelligence.

This makes her excellent at hand-to-hand combat alongside her skills as a martial artist as well as being a master swordsman.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see these two in action!

    Raven 2.0

It’s unclear at this stage how the team will get from the season 1 cliffhanger, standing off against Dick and Trigon to being a fully formed team operating out of San Francisco but it’s clear from this scene that some time has passed.

Could a time jump be involved?

There are several scenes featuring Teagan Croft as Raven in the trailer. Several of those show her wearing her season one costume and wig whilst others show us this new, more comic accurate version of Rachel Roth.

As you can see from the image above she now has a more classic Raven hairstyle. But more importantly she also has the gemstone on her forehead. If we follow the comics then this stone should house the spirit of the defeated Trigon.

The gem is also the source of much of Raven’s power. That could mean we see more of her astral projection, empathy and other powers when the show returns in September.

What’s great to see is that her trademark, dry wit is still well on show in these scenes. Following an origin of sorts in season 1 it seems like we’ll be seeing a much more fully formed Raven in season 2.

    The OG Titans

Many fans will have already seen this moment from the leaked images from SDCC 2019. The original Titans lineup seen doing a superhero march. At this stage we think it’s safe to say this is a flashback moment but we are left wondering how this will fit in to the overall story of the season.

Have the Titans met Deathstroke before and we will see these moments through flashbacks?

There’s so much of Dick Grayson in his classic Robin costume in the trailer it’s hard to define what might be a flashback or what might be something else. But given that Donna Troy is in her classic Wonder Girl costume we’re sure this one is in the past.

Drew Van Acker appears again as Garth here. Though he wasn’t in the photo in Hank and Dawn’s apartment his appearance here does complete the original Titans lineup and that has us pretty excited!

    Slade!

The final reveal of the trailer is the one which many fans have been waiting for, our first look at Esai Morales as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. Though the scene is dimly lit we still get a good impression of the costume that the producers have opted to adapt.

As you can see from the image above Wilson is wearing the chain mail style costume from the more classic era of comics.

It’s difficult to fully define the colour scheme but there’s clearly some orange there in his mask as well as accenting the rest of the costume.

As he appears on screen for the first time a desperate voice introduces him ensuring we hear the name Deathstroke and not Slade as he was known in the Teen Titans cartoon.

At this stage we’re not sure how many episodes he will be appearing in but given that Ravager and Jericho are also appearing it’s safe to say the Deathstroke family will most likely be the major villains of the season.

Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove.

Season 2 drops on September 6, 2019 via DC Universe. Netflix are yet to announce a premiere for the second season internationally.
