Todd Philips Joker is gracing the cover of the latest issue of Empire Magazine and the issue includes some choice words from the director himself.
Discussing how the movie will relate to the character in DC Comics, the director confirmed that Joker will NOT follow the source material in any way.
“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” he explains. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”
Whilst that may anger some fans it’s great to see Philips being able to create an entirely original version of the character.
As well as releasing part of their interview Empire also debuted a new still from the movie.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, also starring are Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Phillips directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver, based on characters from DC. The film is being produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner and Bruce Berman.
Joker will be released on October 4, 2019. For all our Joker coverage head to our archive!
