It was a bit of a rough weekend at the box office for new opener Midsommar, as horror began to cannibalize itself after three consecutive new releases.
Midsommar actually got its start on Wednesday earning $3M including midnights, but over the weekend proper scored a total of $6.5M and a sixth-place finish. This gives it a total so far of $10.9M, which is relatively similar to what Hereditary opened to over its three day weekend last year.
The cult horror was cheap to produce at $10M, and I doubt A24 was expecting this to take off in a significant way. A domestic total of $30M will do this one just fine, as Aster takes his supposedly planned break from horror.
Falling 52% in its second weekend, Conjuring flick Annabelle Comes Home earns $9.7M, giving it a total of $50M so far. Coming in with a considerably lower amount than previous sequel Annabelle: Creation, the Gary Dauberman entry will likely be one of the least successful movies in the franchise, as we await the release of The Conjuring 3 in 2020. Again, the $10M price tag for this one means it’s doing just fine, but Warner Bros. may want to take a break on any other sequel ideas they have for now.
Falling out of the Top 10 completely is poor old Chucky with his 2019 reboot. Child’s Play took another huge drop this weekend, all the way down to a measly $1.4M. A domestic total so far of only $27M means we likely won’t see another incarnation of Mark Hammill’s Chucky, leaving the reigns to fall back to Don Mancini with his planned Child’s Play TV series.
Next week, horror throws something else into a crowded marketplace, as killer gator movie Crawl is expected to open in the $15M range.
