The review embargo has lifted on Sony Pictures Men In Black: International but the news is not encouraging. The movie currently holds a score of only 31% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
The website states that the critic consensus on the movie is:
Amiable yet forgettable, MiB International grinds its stars’ substantial chemistry through the gears of a franchise running low on reasons to continue.
Here is what some of the top critics made of the movie:
New York Times
Nearly everything here reminds you of something else, often better, cleverer, funnier.
The Times (UK)
Trust me. It’s not for you. [1/5]
LA Times
The movie itself, a weightless, unmemorable summer distraction, offers its own curious meta-variation on the joke.
New York Post
The actors would both make very nice AirBnB hosts, but you can’t hang an action comedy on dreamy smiles. [1/5]
AV Club
Like a UFO hovering in the night sky, one moment it’s there, and the next it’s gone. [C]
CNN.com
All told, it’s a breezy but too-often flat popcorn movie, one that tests the considerable chemistry of its stars, former Thor compatriots Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. That the movie holds up as well as it does is a tribute to the two.
Den of Geek
It may be a Men In Black film on paper, but the soul of the series is missing and the experience of watching it is mostly a letdown. Has anyone got a neuralyzer? [2/5]
CBR
The effects may look amazing, but none of the wit has carried over.
Collider
As expected, Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth make a very charming duo, but it’s frustrating to see a film with so much creative potential do so little with the talent and resources it has. [6/10]
TheWrap
Gone is the social commentary, and in its place is globetrotting sci-fi super spy adventure, empty but entertaining, and carried almost exclusively on the multimillion-dollar charms of its stars.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PfTDYG6UOEMen In Black International stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Emma Thompson. Also starring are Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, and Laurent Bourgeois.
