    TITANS “Koriand’r” review

Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove.

Titans is available to watch now on DC Universe in North America. The series will arrive on Netflix in international markets soon.

    Synopsis

Kory’s memories have returned and she reveals unexpected answers to Dick and Donna. Rachel tries desperately to save Gar after a sudden illness hits.

    Review

Finally, 10 weeks in to its debut season and with only one episode remaining Titans has introduced a big bad!

“Koriand’r” is a little confusing as the episodes title. Whilst we are treated to Kory’s origin via the discovery of her space ship there is also a whole lot else going on this week.

Focussing on Kory for a moment, she’s been an enigma for much of the season. Following her journey of self discovery has been a great live action introduction for the character but as an audience we’re ready to see the real We have earned it!

Anna Diop has done a great job of bringing the character to life. Hopefully with her memories returning we’ll see a much more fully formed character appearing when the show returns for its second season.

Anyone worried about the specifal effects need not fret. The set design and CGI of her ship is excellent. Its one of the most complex sets we’ve seen on the show to date. More so even than the Batcave. The producers clearly saved up some budget to ensure these scenes were convincing. It’s easily some of the most exciting scenes of the entire season as we hear about Tamaran for the first time.

Calling the episode “Koriand’r” is definitely a misdirection though. The character is a little shortchanged to allow the Rachel/Trigon plot to take a huge leap forwards.

Finally we get to meet daddy. Those of us hoping that Rachel Nichols wouldn’t turn out to be evil were let down this week. Though all the signs were there I refused to believe Kiera from Continuum would be evil. However when she plunged the knife in to poor hapless Thomas it was all over.

But those reveals led us to finally meet Seamus Dever as Trigon. Although we haven’t seen his demon form yet this is still a huge leap forwards for the show. But with only one episode left it does feel a little late in the game.

I haven’t criticised the show for a lack of a villain because individual episodes have been excellent. On the whole the season has maintained my interest because of its intriguing characters. But now we have a villain it’s obvious what the season has been lacking.

It is once again the character work which wins the episode. Each of the leads has a moment to shine in this episode. Even guest star Conor Leslie back as Donna Troy has a moment to herself. Seeing her using the golden lasso was a great fanboy, edge-of-your-seat moment for sure.

When all is said and done Titans biggest  success of season 1 will be its characters. This episode shows just how far each of the leads has come over the course of the season. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them functioning together as a group and in individual pairings. It really drives home just how far we have come in the space of 10 episodes.

    Verdict

“Koriand’r” is the episode I’ve been waiting for. Finally Titans takes the plunge and introduces its villain. With only open episode to go it’s a little late in the game but finally the momentum I’ve been hoping for is here.

    7.5/10
