Every now and then a cover comes along which causes a storm on social media. Earlier this week a potential cover leaked for DC’s Heroes In Crisis #7.
The cover, clearly by series artist Clay Mann, features the lifeless body of Poison Ivy. Ivy has so far been presumed dead following the massacre at Sanctuary. We can take this cover as confirmation Ivy is indeed one of the victims.
The cover caused controversy over the positioning of the body. Many on Twitter and Instagram felt the cover portrayed the body in an overly sexualised manner. In response to the criticisms it was rumoured that DC had cancelled the cover.
Series writer Tom King confirmed the news in a tweet overnight. Stating “An unfinished cover for Heroes In Crisis 7 was leaked prior to going through the standard DC approval process. I did not like the cover. I discussed the situation with DC editorial who agreed with my objections. This cover will not be used. Thank you.”
In a further tweet King elaborated that despite his issues with the cover his relationship with Mann was no affected. Is this a case of DC bowing to social media criticism? Or has the leak of the cover caused unnecessary controversy for the project?
