Dead Boy Detectives #1 is published by DC Comics, written by Pornsak Pichetshote and illustrated by Jeff Stokely.

Issue #1 is available 27th December 2022 either directly from DC Comics online or from your local comic book store, digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

The Sandman Universe grows as two of its most beloved characters return to the spotlight! Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine have been detectives for decades-and dead best friends even longer. But their investigation into a Thai American girl’s disappearance from her Los Angeles home puts them on a collision course with new and terrifying ghosts that could give even a dead boy nightmares-including a bloodthirsty krasue. Even scarier than the ghosts? Though neither wants to admit it, the boys might be growing apart and perilously close by to the boys’ adventure, Thessaly the witch finds herself held hostage by dangerous magics-both a threat to her life and an insult to her ego that simply will not go unanswered… Eisner Award-winning writer Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian, Infidel) is joined by celebrated artist Jeff Stokely to take the Dead Boys to the scariest place of all: the heart of Hollywood!

    Review

In this issue we are reintroduced to much loved characters from the Sandman Universe, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine two detectives that are back with another mysterious case to look into, this tie it is the mysterious disappearance of a young Thai American girl that they need to look into but doing so unearths many more problems for the investigating duo one of which being the mere matter if a blood thirsty krasue to deal with. This case could well be the hardest the duo have come across causing a strain to their relationship to begin to build.

So far I’ve quite enjoyed the dark journey that has been the Sandman Universe series with it’s many offshoot stories all delightfully dark and twisted. Pornsak Pichetshote writes a story that is mysterious and dark. The overall story has you asking yourself questions as you try to decipher the ongoing investigation, with this being a Sandman Universe story it certainly isn’t an easy open and shut case and one with a terrifying potential of getting a whole lot darker.

For a dark story you need illustrations to equally match it and that’s exactly what Jeff Stokely has done, expertly bringing to life the thrilling story on the pages, each page is immensely detailed highlighting the dark theme perfectly giving the reader a haunting experience.

As a group of stories I am enjoying seeing the Sandman Universe grow into a dark mysterious world, probably not the best bedtime stories but gripping in the true sense.

    Verdict

Another dark story from a thrilling world, expertly written to give the reader an edge of the seat reading experience.
