“Emily, how did you write Wuthering Heights?” Warner Bros. have released a brand new poster for Emily, which stars Emma Mackey as Emily Brontë. On top of a beautiful poster, we also received a new trailer that dives into Wuthering Heights origin. Get ready to be transported back to the 1800s as we witness the rise of one of the most influential writers in history.
Is this film a biopic? Well, the case for Emily Brontë is an interesting one. Because we know so little about her as a person, this film really leans into this idea of an “imagined” story.
In a conversation with TotalFilm, Director Frances O’Connor really dives into what this film actually is.
“I didn’t really think of it as a period film and I didn’t really think of it as a biopic. When you see the film, you understand why there are elements in it that have a supernatural vibe (or) atmosphere” O’Connor says. “I know there’ll be some people that are pissed off about it, people like Brontë historians will probably say, ‘Well, that didn’t happen.’ But I feel like everything in the film is connected to the truth about who she was as a person.”

Emily tells the imagined life of one of the world’s most famous authors, Emily Brontë. The film stars Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Death on the Nile) as Emily, a rebel and misfit, as she finds her voice and writes the literary classic Wuthering Heights. Emily explores the relationships that inspired her – her raw, passionate sisterhood with Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling – The Musketeers) and Anne (Amelia Gething – The Spanish Princess); her first aching, forbidden love for Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen – The Lost Daughter, The Haunting of Bly Manor) and her care for her maverick brother (Fionn Whitehead – The Duke, Dunkirk) whom she idolises.
Frances O’Connor makes her directorial debut with Emily, from her own original screenplay. The film also stars Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Baby, Gentleman Jack).
Emily will be released nationwide on 14th October 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
