Signature Entertainment presents Resistance 1942 digital platforms and DVD from January 10, 2022.

    Synopsis

Resistance 1942 is a tense, WWII-set cat and mouse thriller starring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Mission: Impossible 7), Greer Grammer (The Middle, Awkward), Jason Patric (Wayward Pines, Sleepers) and Oscar nominee Judd Hirsch (Independence Day). It’s 1942, and France is under Nazi control. The Allies have been pushed off the continent and Hitler’s victory is nearly absolute. Deep within this heinous shadow, Jacques uses a radio to broadcast a message of hope.

Unbeknownst to him, villainous and relentless Gestapo captain Klaus Jager has been dispatched to catch the illegal broadcast. As Klaus closes in, Jacques, his daughter Juliet, a small group of other dissidents, must learn to trust the kindness of a stranger if they are to stay ahead of their pursuer. Written and directed by Matthew Hill and Landon Johnson.

    Review

With the sudden renaissance of war films coming to our screens, I’ve enjoyed a fresh step back into one of my favourite genres in film, the war movie. Resistance 1942 is a little different to run-of-the-mill war films which I normally watch. This is more a story about what goes on behind-the-scenes and under the floorboards in the effort to keep hope alive.

The film is an intense and emotional cat-and-mouse game between the dissidents and the elite Gestapo force where broadcaster Jacques (played by Cary Elwes) and his small group use there wits to out smart the Nazis and keep the broadcast live giving hope to those that are trying to keep hope alive. The man tasked to take down the broadcast and chase down the dissidents is Gestapo captain Klaus Jager who will stop at nothing to take them down.

The cat-and-mouse game which unfolds is probably the most intense and heartfelt that I’ve seen, it’s good to see the other side of war and the lengths that normally ordinary people went through to out smart the Nazis and put everything they have on the line and fight for what they believe in. The film shows the importance of trust and how a strong bond between family and sometimes complete strangers and that is sometimes stronger and more effective than any weapon.

The direction of directors/writers Matthew Hill and Landon Johnson is great they have taken the film in an intense and personal direction making it more relatable to the viewer and keeping then gripped to the screen throughout.

    Verdict

Not your average over-the-top action film. As a fan of war movies I enjoyed the cerebral nature and found myself thinking about Resistance 1942 long after the credits had rolled.
