    HAWKEYE 1×05 “Ronin” Review

Stream episodes 1 & 2 of Hawkeye now via Disney+ and catch new episodes streaming Wednesdays.

    Synopsis

Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” stars Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, who teams up with another well-known archer from the Marvel comics, Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. The cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. “Hawkeye” is helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie.

    Review

It feels like Hawkeye has just started yet we only have one episode yet before it is over. In its penultimate episode, episode five titled ‘Ronin’, we are given many teases for how the show’s season finale will turn out.

Episode five really does act as that bridge between episode four and the finale where nothing truly huge happens, until its shocking ending of course. After the fallout of last week’s episode nearly derails their friendship, Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) makes a discovery that changes everything.

Like every other episode, episode five is filled with some great, tension-filled action that really does get the blood pumping. The fight sequence in the car park between Ronin (aka Clint Barton – Jeremy Renner) and Echo (aka Maya Lopez – played brilliantly by Alaqua Cox) is definitely a highlight of the show so far. The fight is so immersive that you feel every single punch being thrown and the tension being built is perfect.

Florence Pugh is also great in this episode too. While she isn’t given a whole lot to do, the conversation she has with Kate Bishop about the death of her sister, Natasha Romanoff, is truly one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the MCU recently. You can feel that hate she has for Clint Barton and why she blames him for her death and seeing the scenario through another lens was a very interesting approach.

However, the huge WTF moment in this episode is at the end where Kate gets a message sent to her by Yelena that Eleanor Bishop (Kate’s mother – played by Vera Farmiga) has been working with the Kingpin and hired the Black Widow’s to kill Clint Barton. This really has been the moment that Marvel fans have been waiting for since the show began and it truly was a perfect cliff-hanger. The great thing about this moment is that it is Vincent D’Onofrio has returned to playing Wilson Fisk/Kingpin after playing the villain in the Netflix hit TV show, Daredevil. This truly was an amazing moment for fans and Hawkeye is shaping up to have a huge finale!
