    HAWKEYE 1×03 “Echoes” Review

Stream episodes 1-3 of Hawkeye now via Disney+ and catch new episodes streaming Wednesdays.

    Synopsis

Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” stars Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, who teams up with another well-known archer from the Marvel comics, Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld. The cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez. “Hawkeye” is helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie.

    Review

We are now three episodes into Hawkeye and officially at the halfway point of the season. This episode, we are introduced to a very prominent character and we get to see the relationship between Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop and Renner’s Clint Barton.

Episode three begins with a flashback to the history of a character that will soon be getting their own Disney Plus series, Echo. We see her growing up and the hardships she had to face as a hard-of-hearing child. All of a sudden, we see her backstory take a haunting turn when Ronin shows up (the character Hawkeye became during the events of Avengers: Endgame) and that is when you start to sympathise with her character.

The whole episode is essentially this bridge between what has come from the previous two episodes and what will happen in the following three episodes. It is very similar to the middle part of an MCU film – after the setup and just before the huge climax. We are now at this middle ground where Hawkeye is expanding on its themes set up in episodes one and two whilst also teasing a big clash between this crime-ridden New York City and our two Hawkeyes.

The action is also far better in this episode than it was in the first two episodes. There is one car chase sequence half-way through the episode that is exhilarating and heart pounding. It is stylish in all the best ways and we truly get to see what kind of arrows that our titular character takes with him on his missions.

    Verdict

Sure, the scope and scale of this TV show doesn’t compare in the slightest to Eternals, Avengers: Endgame or WandaVision but at the same time, it doesn’t need to. It is a self-contained story that is fun to watch, filled with Christmas cheer and great characters that you love to spend time with.
