Published By BOOM! Studios, Power Rangers Vol. 1 is written by Ryan Parrott, illustrated by Franceso Mortarino, coloured by Raul Angulo and lettered by Ed Dukeshire. The cover is by Matteo Scalera.

Vol. 1 collects Power Rangers #1-4 and is available where all good comics are sold in print and on digital from May 19, 2021. Grab your digital copy from Comixology.

    Synopsis

Only the original Power Rangers, now known as the Omega Rangers – Jason, Trini and Zack – can hope to defeat a new cosmic threat, but their secret weapon is… the villainous Lord Drakkon?! But will Drakkon be their ally… or the one who dooms them all?

    Review

I always get excited when a Power Rangers comic drops in my inbox and Vol. 1 certainly was no different. As soon as you see Ryan Parrott’s name on the cover you know you’re in for an exciting ride.

Power Rangers is another story arc set in the Power Rangers “multi-verse” one that Rangers fans will find familiar with as there are characters from the TV show. B Volume 1 is also a story is told in a far more action-packed way. This collection, the first four issues of the Power Rangers series, follows the story of the Omega Rangers (Jason, Zack and Trini), tasked to save the universe from a evil cosmic threat, the Empyreals. Along for the ride is one surprising ally that fans would never expect… Lord Drakkon.

The story moves on with Omega Rangers trusting the guidance of a once sworn enemy. It challenges them to go against the values they normally abide by, leaving the reader to ask: can Drakkon be trusted? Or is it just one elaborate ploy to take out the Rangers? Parrott has constructed the story in such a way that impossible not to feel sympathy for Drakkon. He becomes more of a loveable rogue in place of an evil supervillian.

Once again Parrott has outdone himself with a gripping story that takes you on an action-packed journey of trust and suspicion. I found myself questioning every action as a trap or not. It’s definitely a story that runs deep in to the meaning of friendship and trust, as tempers fray there are unlikely alliances to be made which only test their boundaries further.

In true Parrott style the volume comes to an epic conclusion with the Rangers along with their new found companion travelling the universe on the hunt for the Empyreals still not knowing the size of the threat they are about to face.

I was hooked in from the off, Parrott’s writing opened my imagination and drew me in leaving me playing the scenarios over and over in my head, the illustrations from Mortarino are nothing short of epic with the level of detail bringing Parrott’s words to life. As soon as I finished #4 I wanted more and longed for the next issue to see what dangerous road this cosmic adventure was going to take.

    Verdict

Power Rangers Vol. 1 is a must-read for any action comic book fan and not just Rangers fans. Although fans may find the stories familiar they provide a good avenue in Power Rangers for newbies. A definite recommendation from me.
