    Synopsis

Astronema is one of the most popular Power Rangers villains ever and her true origin is revealed for the first time in a one-shot directly connected to the events of Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers!

Before she became a Power Ranger, a young girl named Karone was kidnapped by bounty hunters and brainwashed into the assassin known as Astronema by two of the greatest threats in the galaxy – Dark Specter and Ecliptor.

But what is Dark Spector’s true plan… and what does it mean for the new Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers teams?

Acclaimed author L.L. McKinney (A Blade So Black) and artist Simone Ragazzoni (Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn) present a powerful new story that no Power Rangers fan can miss.

    Review

Being a big fan of Power Rangers in their different guises over the years I was keen to take a look at Unlimited Heir To Darkness#1 and delve deep into the life story of one of the best known villains in the Power Rangers world. Power Rangers Unlimited #1 gives you a unique insight as author LL McKinney takes you on a whirlwind story of emotion and raw passion as you find out what exactly made Astronema the way she is, all expertly illustrated by the amazing Simone Ragazzoni.

The book starts off putting you in the middle of an epic battle between Astronema and the Rangers, shall we say things don’t quite go to plan for our hapless villian, here is where we start to see glimpses of inside the head of Astronema with her struggling with inner demons and battling self doubt this is only made worse when Ecliptor commands she returns to explain her actions, at this point you notice that the deep dark art stylegives the impression of what type of story you are about to get into.

The book progresses with Astronema, or Kat as she is still known as at this point, in a sort of training session with other members of “The Empire” only for Kat to be ridiculed by her peers for not being able to fight as well as the others, again this just adds to her overall self doubt making her question her own capabilities. It’s a this point we see more of the character The Ecliptor who is taking Kat under his evil wing molding her into the evil villian we all know, it’s after an intense discussion with the Ecliptor Kat seems to change mentally and take confidence in who she “thinks” she is and this is where we see the birth of Astronema as she takes her revenge out on those who mocked her in a thrilling end part to the story.

The ending is fantastic and McKinney has done a great job in making the reader want more, I don’t think I have ever routed for a bad guy but part of me was really behing Astronema and was proud to see what she become.

Throughout the book the main point that grabbed me was the outstanding artwork, the colours just jump out the page at you and the incredible detail is unreal. It enabled me to become even more engrossed in the story with Ragazzoni really bringing the words of McKinney to life grabbing your imagination and making you feel every page.

    Verdict

An action packed engrossing story from front to the back I can’t wait for the next installment of the Astronema story, which incidentally is #6. Definitely recommend to any Power Rangers fans a definite must read.

    9/10
