Jac Schaeffer has been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Captain Marvel. Not only did she co-write Captain Marvel, she also helped write Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow. However, according to the writer, penning the 50s-inspired pilot episode for WandaVision was one of her biggest challenges.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lesley Goldberg on their podcast TV’s Top 5, Schaeffer revealed that sitting down and writing the first episode “was a dark, bleak moment”. Considering how this show diverts away from the things we’re typically used to in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we don’t blame her for being worried. It was a massive undertaking that carried a lot of weight and risk.
Such an unusual couple…
Schaeffer’s biggest obstacle seems to have been the dinner segment which involved the odd couple having dinner with Vision’s boss and his wife. While it is full of gags, the scene actually alludes to something significantly darker.
“The first day I sort of floundered and realized I didn’t have the goods to do it. Then I called in three of the writers and was like, ‘Clearly I’m missing basically the whole Hart’s dinner and the confusion,’ “ said Schaeffer.
With WandaVision nearing the half way mark it’s safe to say that we can expect the show to escalate. When asked about the potential of a second season, Shaeffer simple said “I cannot talk about second season”. Despite WandaVision still running, it does very much feel like a singular story and Shaeffer echoes this.
“In that way, it feels very complete. It’s an emotional completion I stand by and feel great about and always was very much baked in.”
The next episode of WandaVision will be available on the 29th exclusively on Disney+.
WandaVision stars the returning Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision. Joining them are Kathryn Hahn, Kat Dennings, Randall Park and Teyonah Parris.
