Another weekend is drawing to a close and as the dust settles it’s time to find out how Toy Story 4 performed at the box office.
The fourth instalment in the 24 year-old franchise, arriving nine years after the last movie, had some lofty estimations going in to the weekend. Disney was said to be expecting a $140m domestic opening with some industry experts putting that figure as high as $200m.
Did the film live up to expectations?
Despite it’s A CinemaScore from opening night cinema goers, Toy Story 4 opened with a franchise high but slightly disappointing $118m in North America.
Though by no means unsuccessful that figure does come in over $20m under Disney’s estimations. That A CinemaScore should signify some strong legs for the movie in the coming weeks though.
According to BoxOfficeMojo the movie opened in 37 markets, bringing is $120m internationally. The top market was Mexico, where the film opened with an estimated $23.4m. Here in the UK Toy Story 4 had its second largest opening with $15m followed by China ($13.4m), Brazil ($9.6m), Korea ($8.5m), Argentina ($6.9m) and Australia ($6.1m). The film will open in France and Italy next weekend followed by openings in Japan (Jul 12) and Germany (Aug 15).
All that tallies up to a global opening of $238m.
