Since first announcing it was the new home of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comics, Dynamite Entertainment has kept quiet on the Kelly Thompson-penned series. But now Thompson is opening up – just a little – and teasing fans that news is coming sooner than we think.
Appearing on the Near Mint Condition show (and reported by Bleeding Cool) Thompson attempted to discuss the project whilst still remaining coy on major plot details. It turns out secrecy might just be the name of the game when it comes to kicking off a whole new Buffy-verse in comics.
“It’s been a hard book to talk about, I’ll give you just a little bit here. The new way I’ve decided to try to talk about it, while hiding the mysterious interior, is telling people to think of the first issues like an event book. Almost like we’re starting with an event book with something that draws the cast of Buffy and Angel together for like a very personal emotional thing, and then we sort of spin out from there.”
It sounds like a huge event in the lives of Buffy, Angel, Giles, Willow and the gang will be the starting point for these new storylines. As for what that event could be, for now we’re being kept completely in the dark. The good news is that it sounds like Dynamite is going to keep the secrets from readers ahead of the books debuting in stores allowing us to experience it first hand on the page.
“I think Dynamite is going to let me hide this plot point right up until the end. It looks promising. Fingers crossed. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it more if you experience it organically. I hope that the twist will really get people excited and that we can get like a whole second run of people who hear about it, what’s going on in the book, and maybe want to pick it up and see what’s going on.”
Hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out. After the shock cancellation of Hulu’s planned Buffy: New Sunnydale series fans are crying out for new Slayer stories and all her blockbuster work on Absolute Wonder Woman, Thompson may be the perfect writer to take over this universe.
