In the battle between Sinners and One Battle After Another it was the Paul Thomas Anderson film which came out on top at last night’s BAFTA awards. But it was Sinners’ director Ryan Coogler who made history becoming the first black man in the 77-year history of BAFTA to win Best Original Screenplay.

One Battle was the biggest winner of the night taking him the coveted Best Film and Director awards. But the biggest upset of the night came when the film’s lead, Leonardo DiCaprio, was beaten to the Best Actor award by I Swear star Robert Aramayo. Aramayo also took home the prize for the BAFTA Rising Star.

Aside from making BAFTA history, Sinners co-star Wunmi Mosaku took home the prize for Best Supporting actress adding to a successful awards season for the British star. The film also picked up the award for Best Original Score for composter Ludwig Göransson.

Elsewhere, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein may have missed out on the top prizes but did well in the technical categories. The Netflix film picked up Best Costume Design for Kate Hawley, Best Make Up & Hair for  Jordan Samuel, Cliona Furey, Mike Hill and Megan Many whilst designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau took home the Best Production Design.
