It was way back in 2018 when we first heard that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the writers behind Game of Thrones, were taking on a Star Wars trilogy of their own.
It’s now been confirmed that the pair, who recently signed a megabucks deal to create content for Netflix, have now exited their deal with Disney and Lucasfilm.
A brief statement from the pair said “We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”
Their sentiments were echoed by Lucasfilm exec Kathleen Kennedy: “David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,” said Kennedy. “We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”
Instead of working in a galaxy far, far away the pair will instead focus on new content to release via their deal with Netflix.
