The first trailer for DC Studios’ Supergirl has blasted online today giving fans plenty to talk about as Milly Alcock makes her headline debut. Of course we couldn’t let the release pass by without picking out some of the biggest moment and coolest easter eggs to hunt for clues as to what we can expect when the film ahead of the film’s planned June 2026 release in cinemas

So without further ado let’s dive deeper in to the trailer!
Establishing the Super-Cousins Dynamic
We’ve heard James Gunn, Milly Alcock and direct Craig Gillespie talk at length about the difference between Kara (Alcock) and her cousin Clark (David Corenswet). We got to see a little of that when Kara made her on-screen debut earlier this summer in Superman. But the trailer does also go to great length to show us just how different the Kryptonian cousins are.
Opening in what appears to be Kara’s apartment – or at least the one she wakes up in – our first glimpse at the character is actually on the front page of The Daily Planet, but not in the marquee headline. Whilst the paper proudly declares “Superman Saves Town From Nuclear Reactor Explosion” Kara appears in a much smaller image under the headline “Supergirl Rescues Cats”. At first glance this feels like both a joke and perhaps a nod to Streaky the Supercat. But in reality this tells us so much more about who Kara is in the DCU.
Firstly she is an established hero. We’ve seen her in silhouette alongside the Justice Gang in Peacemaker. But this is the first time we’re seeing her publicly acknowledged in-universe in the DCU. So now we know the public is aware of her. But her own heroics are clearly not on the same level as Clark’s. This sets up the story of Supergirl to take the character on a journey to accepting her role as a hero. Something strongly hinted at through the montage of action building towards our first look at Kara in her super-suit.
A bold moment in the trailer comes when Ruthye (Eve Ridley), the young girl Kara has sworn to protect asks what Superman is like. “He sees the good in everyone… and I see the truth”. This speaks to Clark’s romanticism of humanity and Kara’s skepticism. It’s a cutting line of dialogue but beautifully spoken by Alcock, summing up the emotional baggage she carries following her experiences.
Krypto’s Back… and he’s in Danger!
We’ve always known that Krypto would factor strongly in to the story of Supergirl. Fans will remember that Krypto was a companion to Kara in Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s brilliant Woman of Tomorrow comic book. But now we know just how heavily he might factor in to the final film.
We open with Krypto hitting play on Blondie’s “Call Me” which soundtracks the entire trailer before seeing the Super-pup throw shade at Clark by peeing on The Daily Planet. His next appearance comes as Kara laments turning 23 in one of what is probably many alien bars seen in the film. Whilst she dances alone and down flaming shots, Krypto sits nearby as her confidant. Much of the dialogue in the trailer appears to be Kara speaking with Krypto about her troubles giving us a strong idea of the bond between them.
But fans of Woman of Tomorrow will also know what happens to poor Krypto in the book. Early in Tom King’s story he’s shot with a poison arrow by the villainous Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts). Though things look bleak Kara is able to save Krypto who returns at the end of the book alive and well. We may see this reflected in the film with Gillespie using him to setup Kara’s lonely existence only to have her fight to save him. This would explain why he’s only in several brief moments in the trailer and not seen alongside Kara and Ruthye in any of the action scenes.
The DCU Debut of Krypton… and Brainiac!?
James Gunn cleverly steered clear of re-telling Clark’s origins on Krypton on Superman, instead leaving the story of the planet’s destruction to Gillespie and Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira. The trailer gives us a very clear first look at the DCU version of the El-family home world but also may tease a huge connection to 2027’s Man of Tomorrow. Or perhaps a nod to a classic storyline from the comics.
Our first look appears to be a Kryptonian skyline, most likely that of Kara’s home of Argo City. A beam of light pierces the sky beginning to form some kind of dome. The scene cuts to a crowd of people in white robes fleeing in panic, heading towards a temple-like building. In the centre of the frame we get our first look at Emily Beecham as Alura, Kara’s mother. After cutting away to show Ruthye we return to Krypton to see buildings falling away as the planet is engulfed by utter desolation.
The sequence of shots which follow prove to be very interesting. In the next show we see a wider glimpse of the devastation as the beam of light and its dome seemingly lifting part of the city away from the planet’s surface. Yet in the next shot we see a more peaceful moment as Kara appears to attend some kind of funeral amongst another group of Kryptonians in robes.
There’s two ways this storyline could lean. In one, Gillespie could use this moment to allude to the introduction of Brainiac ahead of Man of Tomorrow and the dome could be the Kryptonian city being stolen and bottled by the villain. The character wouldn’t even need to appear, the mere mention of a villain stealing cities would be enough to establish the character ahead of Gunn’s sequel. Or we could all be surprised to find out Brainiac cameos in the film and has already been cast.
But there’s a more likely reason for the dome. In several classic interpretations of the death of Krypton – including the Supergirl TV series – Argo City is in fact saved from destruction by Zor-El (David Krumholtz). Zor-El invents shield technology which forms a dome around the city. Originally intended to protect the inhabitants from air pollution it is predicted by Jor-El – perhaps to cameo in the film – to also save Argo from the planet’s destruction. The force of the blast throws Argo deep in to space where it remains adrift for decades.
The fact we see a funeral procession attended by Kara after seeing the dome in the trailer could suggest the DCU will adapt a version of the comics where Kara grows up on Argo after witnessing the destruction of Krypton. We’ll have to wait until June 2026 to know the answer for sure.
Enter the Main Man
Something which fans have been eagerly awaiting is our first look at Jason Momoa. The actor returns to DC not as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, but as Lobo. A role which legend states was his original focus when meeting with Warner Bros. about joining was the DCEU. Well today’s trailer makes good on giving fans what they want with a tantalising first look in a very brief shot during the main montage.
The moment itself gives nothing away. There’s no dialogue to be heard and Lobo is simply walking in to frame rather than riding his demonic motorcycle. But what we can tell from this is firstly that his design is very accurate to the comics complete with his trademark makeup, hair and spiked jewellery. He’s also smoking a rather large cigar which is spot on to his comic book origins. Whilst his face is mostly in shadow there’s a brief moment he reaches the light and Momoa is barely recognisable.
It appears Lobo is on the same world where Kara and Ruthye encounter a tonne of alien bounty hunters suggesting someone or something has sent them after her. Likely to be Krem, of course. There’s a fire burning behind him suggesting he may have left some chaos in his wake. But for now we’re left to imagine just how much chaos he can cause during what is likely a small cameo role.
Kara’s Travelling Companion
One character who we see throughout the trailer but learn very little about is Eve Ridley’s Ruthye. She’s a key figure in Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow but coming out of the trailer we don’t know if her story will play out the same way or whether Ana Nogueira has written something inspired by but entirely new.
In the comic Krem murders Ruthye’s father leaving the girl all alone in the universe. She’s stumbled upon by Kara, herself feeling very isolated and lost and the two form an unlikely bond through which Supergirl vows to track down the killer. That story is likely to form the backbone of the film but whether the journey itself will reflect their time together in the comic is still a well kept secret.
We see Ruthye several times in the trailer, mainly on the same planet where we glimpse Lobo and the rest of the bounty hunters. She’s carrying the sword which fans of the comic book will recognise and she’s clearly aware of heroes like Superman. But other than seeing her protected by Kara nothing is given away about her character. Another way in which the trailer shows us so much of what to expect without giving away all of the context.
