In celebration of Earth Day – the annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection, occurring this year on 22nd April – Rakuten TV has created a collection of focused programming dedicated to climate change and alternative solutions for a sustainable living.

For those who want to deepen their awareness and sensitivity about the global climate crisis, Rakuten TV’s dedicated selection of films and FAST channels aims to highlight some of today’s most critical environmental issues to help educate, inspire, and drive action.

The content is available for free on the AVOD (advertising-based) section of the platform. The Earth Day collection will include:

    ·       Eating Our Way to Extinction

Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet, this entertaining and surprising documentary will challenge the way you look at the food industry. What is the true cost of food? Who pays the price? Featuring shocking undercover footage and poignant first-hand accounts from indigenous people, this one-of-a-kind documentary will permanently change your perception of food and its connection to the future of our planet.

    ·       2040

Award-winning director Damon Gameau embarks on a journey to explore what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream.

    ·       Sh*t Saves The World

The #2 Problem Facing Humanity. Sh*t Saves The World is a humorous take on our species’ impact on the Earth, exploring serious topics in an environmental documentary format. The project brings to light subjects that are not often discussed… at least not at the dinner table.

    ·       Living The Change

How can we conceive a world without electronics or air travel? What might seem like an incredible thing could happen in only a couple of centuries when fossil fuel reserves fall drastically due to the relentless increase in consumption demanded by today’s civilization. What concrete actions could make a difference in our goal of having a more sustainable economy on a planet with finite resources? This is precisely the question that faces this revealing and educational film about a crushing but apparently invisible reality. The great difference between Living the Change and other documentaries on the subject is the historical perspective on human’s relationship with nature…

    ·       Snow To Sand

Through a stunning cinematography, in this documentary we follow two explores that embark on an unprecedented winter expedition of the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico.

    ·       Trading Paradise

From Switzerland to Zambia, via the Amazon and Peru, TRADING PARADISE is a critical behind-the-scenes look at the commodities sector and its ecological and human consequences.

The AVOD offer will be also complemented by a FAST (Free-advertising served television) offer of channels featuring impact-led content, enabling viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and to put sustainability under the spotlight through a range of natural history programming, powerful award-winning documentaries, and short films, with channels including Naturescape, Earth Touch TV, Real Wild, Adventure Earth, Weather Spy and WaterBear.

Leveraging its platform to produce an environmental and social impact is part of the sustainability strategy of Rakuten TV. The company has funded its own ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) area in 2023 and will release its first ESG Report this year and a dedicated climate change project to control its impact within the entertainment industry.

For Earth Day, the company will also run internal initiatives for employee’s engagement and sensibilisation on climate change to start embedding ESG at the core of its strategy.
