Review
All through this comic series we have been taken on an emotional journey as Avery tries to uncover the answers to what is inside him. Issue #6 gets even more intense as Avery gets ever closer to the answer and getting his family back, but does he really want to know the answer? Will this change everything for Avery? One thing is for sure, this won’t be a civilised chit chat over tea, this is going to be one explosive finale. All through the story arc we have witnessed the pain that Avery has suffered as whatever was put inside him to “help” him begins to take over but Avery has a constant challenge fight it and keep it hidden, now may be the time to unleash his hidden power, the well being of his family is at stake with emotions running high this is a dangerous situation for Avery to be in.
As an introduction to LaToya Morgan and her comic writing I found Dark Blood a series that was relentless from the start, captivating from the beginning and not letting go throughout, a strongly written story that pulls on the emotions of the reader and making the imagination thrive, when every issue finished I couldn’t wait until the next I am looking forward to see what projects LaToya may have coming next as if they are anything near Dark Blood then we will definitely be in for a treat.
The artistic team of Moisés Hidalgo, coloured by AHG and Allison Hu brought a raw energy to the comic clearly capturing LaToya Morgan’s vision and building on it to give the reader a fully immersive experience, each page was full of powerful energy taking you deep into the mind and life of Avery. All in all a fantastic job done by the whole creative team.
Verdict
A dark and emotional story that pulls on your emotions, as a debut comic series from LaToya Morgan this story arc is strong and definitely has left me wanting to see more from her. A story that makes you stop and think is the sign of a good piece of writing.
