SUPERMAN & LOIS 1×15 “Last Sons of Krypton” Review

Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch who return as the titular characters. They will, in turn, be joined by Emmanuelle Chriqui as Clark’s ex-girlfriend, Lana Lang, Erik Valdez as Lana’s husband, Kyle Cushing. Dylan Walsh will portray Lois’ father, General Sam Lane. Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin also co-star in the series as Superman and Lois’ sons, Jonathan and Jordan Kent.

    Synopsis

n the action-packed first season finale, Superman’s worst nightmare comes to life, and Lois confronts Leslie Larr (recurring guest star STACEY FARBER). Meanwhile, Lana, Kyle and Sarah agree to stay to help General Lane.

    Review

Last we left the Superfam they were against the ropes.  Tal-Rho and Zeta-Rho have reinforcements, a world ending plan and Superman’s son.  It was not looking good for the family or for the world and it looks like it’s going to take everyone to stop Zeta-Rho’s plans to replace all humans with Kryptonian.

Zeta-Rho has not been a major force in this season but has been the driving force for Tal-Rho throughout his life as Morgan Edge, you can tell throughout this episode he is an absolute smug slime ball though as he taunts Clark through the body of Jordan knowing full well Clark would not hurt his own son, as well as with Lois when she tries to rescue Jordan later on.

What was great to see as well was the big fight included everyone throughout the season, we had Lois and Jonathan fight to save Jordan, Irons and Clark fighting the converted human/kryptonians as well as Tal-Rho, General Lane doing what he can to protect the people while also showing his growth of his trust in Superman. Hell even the Cushings were helping on the ground by rescuing the residents of Smallville with Kyle having a major hero moment of running into a burning building to save a woman.

All hands are in to stop Tal-Rho and Zeta-Rho from destroying the planet (sadly again no reference to any of the Arrowverse heroes), Irons even being such a key player that he himself was prepared to die for this new earth.

Looking back, each character has grown significantly throughout the season. From Jordan going from a shy, scared and awkward kid to a more confident young man developing into the next Superman to Irons going from being on this planet to kill Superman to fighting by his side.  It’s incredibly refreshing to have character growth used as a payoff as we witness in other Arrowverse shows, they learn a lesson but then forget weeks later.

One critique which I feel is both fair and unfair though is the cliffhanger being interesting but not too gripping.  While I will 100% return when the second season drops, I am doing so because of the love of these characters more so than the mind blowing cliffhanger.

Finally let’s address the big question which will always be discussed with other geeks over a beer.  Tyler Hoechlin as Superman and where he stands in the Live Action actors who have portrayed the iconic Man of Steel.  I will say for me personally, he is the top, that’s not to say the others are worse but Tyler just encompasses everything Superman is, his compassion, rage, charm and conflict all shines brightly in 15 episodes.  Same for Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, her portrayal as Lois was incredible throughout, her fragile backstory and her tenacity was admirable throughout the season and these two actors together created a highly believable couple who really felt like they have been through so much but they are stronger together.  I will wear it with honour that for me, they are the ultimate live action Clark and Lois.

    Verdict

It is with great pride I can say Superman & Lois not only stuck its landing but might just be the strongest first season of any superhero show, Arrowverse or otherwise!  The tension throughout was felt and to see all of these characters grow from the first episode to the last has been incredible, not one of them felt like a weak link or dragged the show down which is a major win for them. Even if you suffer from Arrowverse fatigue, this show will completely reignite that fire that once shined brightly on the other shows.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
