LEGENDS OF TOMORROW 6×11 “The Final Frame” Review

Legends of Tomorrow season 6 stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swann, Jes Macallan, Adam Tsekhman, Shayan Sobhian, Lisseth Chavez and Raffi Barsoumian. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

    Synopsis

When the Legends track down another Alien pod, they find a device that transports them to a cosmic bowling alley.  Before consulting Sara, Astra and Mick, Spooner makes a bet against the reigning champs for a ride back to the Waverider, but not everyone is happy about the plan when they realize what they are up against.  Elsewhere, Nate plans a romantic date for Zari, but nothing goes as planned.  Meanwhile, Behrad and Gary try to distract Ava from what’s going on with wedding planning.  Series star Jes Macallan directs.

    Review

Deep Space Bowling.  I mean what other show on the CW could possibly pull this concept off?

This week the group breaks off into 3 teams.  The first to find the alien pod, the second stay on the ship and the third go on a romantic trip away from it all.
Firstly the field team consisting of Sara, Spooner, Astra and Rory set off to a impound lot and find the alien pod broken open, finding a metallic cube in the machine they are quickly teleported to a bowling alley deep in space and are the only 4 people who stand between 3 obnoxious bowlers and the total destruction of the Earth! (again only the Legends can get away with this storyline)

Elsewhere on the ship, Behrad, Constantine, Gary and Ava waste time cooking pot brownies, drinking evil potions and trying on wedding dresses respectively before they too find themselves unable to contact the others or even find Earth itself. Constantine shows his further decline into addiction by showing him on a buzz but also madly dependent on the potion (seen drinking on 2 occasions).  Most certainly a sign of things to come later down the line for him.

Finally we have Nate and Z who have taken a camping trip to rekindle their romance.  Quite lighthearted and funny compared to the fate of the world as they find themselves having to deal with Glampers who have double booked their camping spot.

Back in the Space ally, the team finds that half of them are great bowlers while the other two are terrible.  It’s a unique grouping considering Sara and Rory are the two longest serving members of the team while Astra and Spooner are the two newest members so this is an interesting dynamic to play off.  Spooner and Rory in particular keep butting heads before Sara drops a fantastic bit of leadership by introducing beer into the mix, allowing the team to loosen up and really get stuck in.
You see, the enemies have turned the earth into a bowling ball and are using it in the game, causing chaos on the ground for Nate and Z.

Eventually thanks to Constantine and his potion magic, he is able to bring the ship to the bowling alley and the onboard crew support from the sides and while on Earth, Nate and Z lend a helping hand by using one of Spooners guns to burn the finger of one of the bowlers causing him to gutterball his attempt.

While this storyline was entertaining though, it does lead to questioning its connection to the rest of Earth Prime as the entire planet was taken and was shaking violently while 3 holes appeared on the earth.  Yet it’ll never be mentioned or brought up in any of the other shows.  It does feel that there is a strong disconnect between the shows that was not quite there in the past which is a let-down for me.

Eventually the team are victorious and share beers and nachos on the bowling alley but not before the owner notices strong magic emanating off Constantine and muttering under his breath that it will be the death of him.  Knowing that Matt Ryan is leaving the Constantine role behind at the end of the season (but staying on the show as someone else?) does this hint that Earth Prime Constantine will die?

    Verdict

Another fun and entertaining episode for the show and some fun character moments but with it taking place in present day and having zero reference or repercussions on any of the other Arrowverse shows does work against it and further distances what was once a well-crafted shared universe.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
