Legends of Tomorrow season 6 stars Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Tala Ashe, Matt Ryan, Olivia Swann, Jes Macallan, Adam Tsekhman, Shayan Sobhian, Lisseth Chavez and Raffi Barsoumian. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

    Synopsis

The Legends find themselves in 2045 trying to defeat an Alien warrior which leaves Zari no choice but to enter a popular singing competition. Ava has finally had enough of Rory’s behavior and with the encouragement of Spooner, gives him some tough love. Sara finds herself struggling after being attacked, but someone familiar helps her to keep searching for refuge. Meanwhile, Zari and Constantine have a much-needed conversation with each other.

    Review

The Legends are going back to the future this week to take down an alien hell-bent on taking over the world…by winning a singing show! Legends of Tomorrow never fails to deliver what can arguably be described as downright insane plots.

Something the team rarely does is go to distant futures though, whether it’s a budget thing or a story thing I don’t know but as a futurist myself I am always keen to see how people visualise the possible futures.

In the original 2045 timeline we met the original Zari but thanks to the team’s magical creature interference in 2019 that future never came to happen, hence how we got our new Zari.  Now in new 2045 we have The Rock as President, a world famous Zari and a reality talent show judged by a man in a s’more helmet!

The team is brought to 2045 to prevent Zari’s ex DJ S’More Money from being killed by an alien hunter live on TV. Zari takes the lead with the main team and takes Constantine, Behrad and Nate to the studio and after an encounter with said alien live on TV had now altered the timeline so that Lord Knoxicrillion is entered into the competition which he believes will make him the King of Earth should he win.
Is this a purely ridiculous plot? Yes.  Am I here for every insane second of it? Also yes!

Elsewhere on the team Rory is acting more distant than he usually is sadly due to the continued absence of Sara and the team’s struggles on trying to find her while also working on his relationship with his daughter. His outbursts almost destroys the planet when Lord K retaliates by summoning his alien armada to Earth.

The two characters who get the spotlight this week though is the budding romance between Constantine and Zari. They have been going casual for the last few episodes but both are hesitant to take the next step, heavily hinted at by the fantastic Buzzcocks song Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve).

It’s an odd coupling for sure but as the song does resonate with their relationship, it was never meant to be anything more but now it is as they’ll have to deal with it. It hits a big bump though when Constantine hears a talk between Zari and her mother where she says it’s nothing serious which obviously hurts John’s feelings.

Back to the main stage though, Zari steps up to the challenge and makes a surprise entrance to the competition, winning enough fans to make it through to the finals against Lord Knoxicrillion for the fate of the throne and the fate of the planet itself.

DJ S’more Money being the absolute tool he is, fixes the contest by giving Zari a song to perform while also giving it to Lord K to ensure Zari loses.  Kudos to the Legends Lads who firmly put him in his place though and for Behrad for throwing him into the wall!

Come to the final round, Lord K has analysed every major artist in history and performs what one would say is the perfect performance, ultimately leaving Zari without a song to sing.  Out of left field she pulls out a cover of Buzzcocks song Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) with Constantine helping out with backing vocals and lead guitar.  This spur of the moment was enough for the team to win and Lord Knoxicrillion admits his defeat while sending his army away.

Back on the ship Lord K reveals how he was taken and we discover he is like the alien in Men In Black and is a tiny alien operating a full body from inside the head but before he can provide any more assistance he gets stepped on by Rory who now insists on the plan to hunt down the specific alien who took Sara.

Speaking of which! Sara and Gary make very little progress this week, Sara still suffering from being poisoned by evil Earhart last episode is struggling to stay awake while they hide from the people hunting them.  Gary reluctantly goes Alien and eats the attackers before discovering them to be Ava Clones! Sara stumbles through the woods in a haze trying to catch up to what she sees as Ava and is brought to a building. Stumbling inside she is met by a hipster looking man (manbun included) who says he has been waiting a long time for her.  The B plot made little progress but raised more questions.  Why are Ava Clones roaming space? Who’s the manbun?  Can Sara and Gary make it back home?  Let’s hope we get answers soon because Rory needs Sara and Sara needs the Legends!

    Verdict

This episode felt really cheesy and almost early season Doctor Who in some aspects and while Lord Knoxicrillion was somewhat a low budget looking alien, the show was saved by the cast leaning into the ridiculous nature of the story. Rather than trying to take it serious they have fun with it and for me that makes all the difference.  Legends of Tomorrow is something I will always look forward to seeing each week more than any of the other Arrowverse shows.
