Universal Pictures are in negotiations to bring in director Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie) to direct and produce the new movie Renfield, a monster film based on the original story of Dracula’s legendary henchman written by Robert Kirkman.
McKay will be joined on the project by producing partner Samantha Nisenboim as Executive Producer, the script has been written by Ryan Ridley, the film team from Skybound Entertainment will be producing including the team of Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.
The film takes inspiration from the original Dracula story where Renfield is an inmate in the lunatic asylum where it was thought he was suffering from delusions when he was actually a servant of Dracula. It is thought that the film will be based in modern times rather than a period piece.
It was originally thought that Dexter Fletcher would direct the film but he left to take on Paramount’s reboot of The Saint leaving it open for McKay, with his previous experience of being able to mix horror and humour it seems McKay would be the perfect choice. With Universal already having big monster films on the cards such as Wolfman (starring Ryan Gosling) it is thought the board believed Renfield would add a taste of humor to the horror mix.
We will give you more details on the film and its launch date when we receive them.
