BATWOMAN introduces a new love interest for Kate Kane

Batwoman is adding a new love interest for Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) to the cast in the form of The Passage alum Brianne Howey.

Entertainment Weekly has released two new first look images at Howey (below) in the role of Reagan, a bartender at an event held by Tommy Elliot, aka Hush. The pair will meet in this week’s episode and will begin dating as soon as episode 4. This new love interest is said to cause issues between Kate and ex-partner Sophie (Meagan Tandy).

According to showrunner Caroline Dries, Sophie will be “a little bit envious” over Reagan. “She knows she doesn’t really have a right to be too opinionated about it because she has supposedly, on paper, moved on,” explains Dries. “But at the same time, she’s a woman with a heart and can’t help but feel stung, like, ‘I guess I passed up this wonderful, amazing person, and of course everyone else is gonna want to date her next.’”

“We’ve only seen [Kate] get her heart wrung a bit, and now here is this woman who’s smart, funny, cool, available, and it brings out sort of the smile and hope that Kate can find normalcy in her life,” she added. “Of course, like any superhero will tell you, it’s not easy to live two lives and keep one identity a huge secret.”

“When we had a character who was so defined by her sexual orientation, just naturally by the press and what makes her unique, it was important for me that was a major part of the show and that we’re not shying away from it,” she said. “On a macro level, we just want Kate to be in a romantic situation. Then on a story level, Kate has now by this time embraced her identity as Batwoman and has kind of committed to being the city’s new hero, and she wants it to be easier than it is and realizes very quickly, ‘Yeah, now I see why Bruce Wayne never had a long-term girlfriend and never got married.’”

Batwoman stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman. The series co-stars Dougray Scott, Elizabeth Anweis, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang and Rachel Skarsten.

The series Sunday’s at 8/7c on The CW in North America with episodes replaying via The CW app the following day. UK airdates are yet to be announced.
