Interesting news this morning from The Hollywood Reporter regarding the potential opening weekend for Black Panther. Around a month ago predictions put the film at making $120-$125M across the opening weekend. That’s a huge figure for a first outing for a solo Marvel character.
Now the tracking information has jumped and estimates put the film at $165M for Presidents Day weekend. That could easily put the film in the top 10 openings for a superhero movie, a chart dominated by Marvel. The top studio openings for superhero movies in North America is led by The Avengers (2012) with $207.4m, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) with $191.3m, Captain America: Civil War (2016) with $179.1m, Iron Man 3 (2013) with $174.1m.

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler from a screenplay co-written with Joe Robert Cole. Chadwick Boseman reprises his role as T’Challa/Black Panther and is joined in the film by Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Any Serkis and Forest Whitaker.
The Marvel Studios/Disney film is due for release February 12, 2018 in the UK and Feb 16 in the US.
