Synopsis
Can-do koala Buster Moon and his all-star cast of animal performers prepare to launch a dazzling stage extravaganza in the glittering entertainment capital of the world. There’s just one hitch — he has to find and persuade the world’s most reclusive rock star to join them. What begins as Buster’s dream of big-time success soon becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.
Review
Believe it or not it has been five years since the release of Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Sing. That film was a musical breath of fresh air to the genre. Introducing a wonderfully diverse cast of musical creatures with a stellar cast of voice actors behind the microphone.
In an almost post-pandemic landscape, Sing 2 arrived in US cinemas on December 22, 2021. For us Brits an extra month has lapsed before Matthew McConaughey’s Buster Moon returns to cinemas.
The sequel reunites the main cast of the first film, including Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Tori Kelly and Taron Egerton. This time around they’re on a bigger stage as Buster takes his musical troop to Redshore City – a replacement for Las Vegas – as they pitch to perform in a casino owned by the villainous media mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale).
Sing 2 is bigger and louder than its predecessor. Though its story is fun and colourful it is by no means original. But in a film which will be predominantly watched by a young audience it doesn’t matter. Whilst the parents can be entertainment by the inclusion of U2’s Bono as rock star Clay Calloway, the kids will be delighted by the musical glitz and glamour of Redshore City.
Sing included so many musical big hitters than the soundtrack to this sequel feels a little less stellar. That could also be this reviewers own disconnection with the world of popular music. The songs which are in here are still captivating and will no doubt dazzle audiences who can sing along with every word.
As an adult, watching Sing 2 was more of a lesson in analysing the craft of producing such an eye catching animated feature. Redshore City feels like a living, breathing location. The landscape is so well inhabited that it’s almost an assault on the senses, a bit like living in a real big city. Likewise the interiors of the hotel and it’s grand amphitheatre are a sight to behold.
The teams final performance of Buster’s play is brought to life using a number of elaborate set pieces which are all incredibly well designed. There’s a play-within-a-play in that Buster’s show requires set designs and costume designs which are equally impressive.
Verdict
A laugh-out-loud sequel, Sing 2 is the perfect family fun movie to get over the winter blues. The kids are going to love it.
