What we learnt from the GODZILLA VS KONG trailer

The trailer for the upcoming Godzilla vs Kong dropped last night. We got confirmation about the trailer on Thursday and it was definitely worth the wait. It was full of brilliant visuals, amazing monster action, and we finally got to briefly explore the story. There was a lot to process and it appears as though this film is building up to something larger than we originally anticipated. Today, we’re going to do our best and breakdown some of the key aspects spotted in the trailer and what they could mean. Of course, none of this is actual fact so take this with a pinch of salt.

    Mechagodzilla

So this came out of nowhere. At the beginning of the trailer you can spot a city being destroyed. It’s hard to tell what it is exactly, but after spotting a blurry object that has a silver shine and somewhat resembles Godzilla’s head… well, you do the math. In addition to that, after being briefly introduced to our supposed human antagonist, we can actually spot a screen that reveals what looks like Mechagodzilla. Most of it is covered, but we can definitely spot feet and the beginning of a tail. This trailer confirms that Mechagodzilla has joined the MonsterVerse. What is Mechagodzilla doing here? We’ll discuss the possibilities in a bit.

    Evil Serizawa

Tying in nicely to Mechagodzilla is the introduction of Ren Senrizawa played by Shun Oguri. Some will recognize that name. Ishiro Serizawa was the hero of King of the Monsters. He bravely sacrificed himself to provide Godzilla with the boost he needed to defeat King Ghidorah. It turns out he had a son called Ren. Now, the trailer seems to imply that Ren is responsible for Mechagodzilla. It is indeed possible that Ren, much like Mark Russell in KOTM, has a vendetta against the titans. His father was obsessed with his work at Monarch so it is safe to assume that Ren is out to get rid of Godzilla, the titans, and Monarch. Of course, that’s just a theory but given the relationships that run through all of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies, families torn apart by work and the monsters may have some relevance here.

    Beauty killed the Beast

Much like in the original King Kong story, there is always a personal connection associated with Kong. Most of the time it is a damsel in distress. However this time, it seems as though Kong has taken pity on a small child. Given that both are orphans, it is likely that Kong empathized with the girl and befriended her. From the trailer it looks as though she is the key to gaining Kong’s trust. Weirdly, he doesnt seem too angry about being in shackles and chains.

    Godzilla is Bad?

Has he though? Bare with us here. In 1974, Toho released Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. In the classic movie, Godzilla starts going on a bit of a rampage. However, it is soon revealed that aliens have created their own version of Godzilla that is fully mechanical. An injury on Godzilla reveals his silver body. The rampaging Godzilla was really Mechagodzilla. With the help of another Kaiju, King Caesar, the real Godzilla battles Mechagodzilla while the human characters deal with the alien invaders. Now, we don’t think aliens will play a part in this film. However, what is important to note is that King Ghidorah was an alien himself. So it isn’t a complete stretch. Later on though, Mechagodzilla, in his numerous appearances, was a man made invention designed to battle Godzilla. This seems to be the more plausible approach.

Back to the point. It is possible that the Godzilla we see is actually Mechagodzilla. The real Godzilla is being framed and Monarch have hired King Kong to defeat Godzilla believing him to be bad. The movie could end with the realization that Godzilla is still good and they team up to defeat the metal monstrosity. Unfortunately, that leaves a bit of a gaping hole. Where is the real Godzilla?

    Humans have angered Godzilla

The other possibility is that Godzilla has had enough. At the end of King of the Monsters it was heavily hinted that Godzilla would not always be on our side. Something might be happening that is enraging Godzilla. It might be possible that the new villains are experimenting on titans to create their Mechagodzilla, they may also be killing the titans. The natural order has once again been disrupted and Godzilla, as King, is furious. We know that Godzilla has some sort of connection with the titans, so it could be that he can sense when something is wrong. Monarch, Including Maddison, could be on a journey to find out the cause while Kong attempts to hold Godzilla back.

    Ancient History

It becomes apparent that Godzilla and Kong share a deep history. Look back to the credits from King of the Monsters. A cave painting seems to prove that both species have had a history. Both Godzilla and Kong have been at war for generations and this is their long awaited rematch. What’s also interesting to note here is that both are the last of their kind. Some images from the trailer take us back to Skull Island, but it is also likely that we’ll get to explore the Hollow Earth which has been key in the MonsterVerse. Not only has it allowed the titans to survive, but it has also kept many of them hidden. We may actually get to see what the Hollow Earth looks like and how it has contributed to the longevity of the titans.

What it means for Godzilla vs Kong… We really can’t say.

    Kong’s secret weapon

A while ago, some toy leaks revealed that Kong would wield an axe. Not just any axe. This axe had a blade made from Godzilla’s dorsal plate. What does this mean exactly? Well the trailer showed us what it could it. Not only will it be made out of an incredible strong material capable of hurting Godzilla, but it also has the ability to absorb and deflect his atomic breath. It looks as though the plate absorbs the blast and distributes it. Think Black Panther’s new suit.

Kong doesn’t have the axe on the ship. So he might have crafted it after the first fight- this seemingly debunks the theory that Godzilla is Mechagodzilla. However, there is a chance that Monarch had this dorsal plate beforehand, as a result of Ghidorah’s fight in Boston or even Antarctica. Since Kong seems to be helping Monarch, they may give him access to this weapon to help level the playing field.

Will one fall in Godzilla vs Kong?

The big tagline for this movie is “one will fall”. What are they chances that they actually kill one of the titans. Honestly, we can’t see it happening. The thing with Godzilla is that he has a very rich history that allows for multiple installments. Hedorah, Space Godzilla, Biollante, Gigan, even Destoroyah. Despite being three films in, Godzilla still has a lot more to offer. When it comes to Kong, he still needs more time to develop and grow. Keeping him on Skull Island would give us the opportunity to explore Skull Island as well as meet some of its more deadly inhabitants.

    Ghidorah?

At the end of King of the Monsters, it was revealed that Charles Dance’s character had salvaged the head of King Ghidorah that Godzilla ripped off during their fight moments before the Oxygen Destroyer hit them both. Honestly, we were expecting Mecha King Ghidorah to be the nemesis in this film. But the retrieval of his head may have deeper implications. It could be used to power Mechagodzilla, or it could be used in a way to understand alien biology. Ghidorah could control the titans, his brain might explain the absence of certain titans and Godzilla’s burning rage. Will it play a role in Godzilla vs Kong? Who knows.

    Whats that?

We dont want to jump the gun, but it resembles the beetle-like ships from Man of Steel. Its probably Monarch… maybe?

Godzilla vs Kong stars Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall. Joining the cast is also Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza González, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir, Zhang Ziyi, Van Marten and Lance Reddick.
