What I adore about Harley & Ivy: Life & Crimes #2 is how it weaves in iconic storylines and moments we know and love, while adding just the right amount of extra context. The very first arc opens with Harley reminiscing about the day she finally breaks up with the Joker, and Ivy swoops in to rescue her. It’s a moment we’ve seen before, something familiar, but this comic goes further—it fills in the gaps we’ve always wondered about: “What actually happened after Ivy saved Harley?” How did their relationship blossom after the chaos of the Joker? How did they navigate the tricky path from rescue to romance? These subtle touches deepen their story in a way that feels natural, thoughtful, and utterly satisfying.

The colouring in this issue is something truly special. After a bar fight, Harley and Ivy escape into the night and shadows, and the use of blue and red is simply breathtaking. It’s a testament to Erica Henderson’s skill—stunning, evocative, and utterly cinematic. Also worth noting, the lettering in this series is so so cool. It’s bold, striking, and eye catching, which perfectly matches Harley & Ivy.

What I also love about this issue is how it handles action. One sequence in a hallway is executed brilliantly. It’s not just a series of disconnected panels; you can see the entire hallway, and Harley and Ivy appear at different points, fighting their way out. It’s a clever way to show space, movement, and the passage of time all at once. So well done—and so fun.

The humour and banter between Harley and Ivy is perfectly captured. One particular quip from Ivy had me in stitches. While visiting Amusement Mile, Ivy stands in front of the Joker’s lair—a massive, ridiculous clown—and shouts, “How have the police not figured out the Joker stays here?” I genuinely laughed out loud. This is just one example of their sparkling chemistry. The writers really understand what makes this duo tick, and they lean into it beautifully.

Overall, this is the comic for Harley and Ivy fans. It’s funny, endearing, chaotic, and action-packed—it delivers everything you’ve come to expect from them, and then a little extra. It adds depth to their lore as a duo, which is a treat. And, of course, the artwork elevates it even further: beautiful frames, stunning use of portrait versus landscape to highlight different moments, and a visual style that sets a standard all comics should aspire to.
