Prepare to boldly go to San Diego Comic Con 2023. The various arms of the Star Trek franchise have announced plans for activations, panels and booths from across the upcoming pop culture event. Announcements include the return of the franchise to Hall H with a panel focussing on the futures of Discovery, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.

The annual gathering of nerd culture will also feature plenty of Trek panels and events focussing on the history of the decades-old franchise so today we’re giving you our guide to a Trek fan’s perfect SDCC 2023.

    Star Trek #7 (IDW Publishing)

It all kicks off with IDW Publishing on Thursday with the Star Trek: More Bold Than Ever Before panel which will focus on the publishers plans for continuing to grow their ever-expanding line of Star Trek comics. The panel is happening Thursday July 20, 2023 12:00pm – 1:00pm PDT in room 28DE. Here’s the full description:

Never before has Star Trek been bigger (or bloodier)! IDW Group Editor Heather Antos and writers Chris Cantwell, Collin Kelly, and Jackson Lanzinggive an inside look into Star Trek: Day of Blood, the first ever Star Trek comics crossover event. Plus: Marc Guggenheim, Sam Maggs, Malachi Ward, Chirs Sequiera, and Liana Kangas share all the exciting things happening across IDW’s line of Star Trek comics.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount+)

For those looking for their fix of Star Trek TV then you’ll want to be in Hall H on Saturday from 1:30pm – 3:00pm PDT for the Star Trek Universe panel which will feature creatives from across the franchise. With the writers strike still underway and the actors strike threat still looming, no names have been confirmed as yet but the con has released a short brief for the panel:

The fan-favorite Star Trek universe panel returns to Comic-Con, featuring exclusive content from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Fans of the classic Star Trek: The Animated Series won’t want to miss a very special celebration as the show embarks on its 50th birthday celebrations. Official 50th Star Trek Animated Celebration kicks off Friday July 21, 2023 10:00am – 11:00am PDT  in Room 25ABC.

The Star Trek brand team first look at Star Trek: The Animated Celebration, a campaign celebrating 50 years of Star Trek: The Animated Series. Explore the latest in publishing, gaming, and beyond with one-of-a-kind giveaways, exclusive sneak peeks, and special panelists

    Star Trek: Picard (Prime Video/Paramount+)

Saturday night will bring Star Trek: Picard show runner Terry Matalas and series’ star Todd Stashwick to the con for a special in-depth conversation on the psychology of the final season. Boldly Go: The Psychology of Star Trek: Picard is taking place Saturday July 22, 2023 7:00pm – 8:00pm PDT in Grand 12 & 13, Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina.

Dr. Drea Letamendi (psychologist at UCLA, host of The Arkham Sessions Podcast) and Brian Ward (host of The Arkham Sessions Podcast) take a deep dive into the psychology of Star Trek: Picard’s final season with showrunner Terry Matalas and actor Todd Stashwick. This lively conversation will celebrate what makes Trek both illuminating and entertaining and will cover powerfully emotive themes such as resilient leadership, family conflict, and finding purpose in the face of failures, risks, and dangers only imagined in the final frontier.

Finally, Saturday night will also see the legend that is William Shatner appearing for his annual William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill panel. Saturday July 22, 2023 4:30pm – 6:00pm PDT in Hall H.

The icon himself, William Shatner, hosts an entertaining discussion about his illustrious career, spotlighted by his two most recent adventures: Legion M’s new documentary, You Can Call Me Bill, and the famed sci-fi captain’s real-life journey into space! Beam into Hall H for a lively chat between Shatner, doc director Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas, Lynch/Oz), Legion M executives Jeff Annison and David Baxter, and some very special surprise guests. Publicist Gary Miereanu moderates the festivities.

    Star Trek Universe (CBS)

On the show floor you can find the Paramount+ team manning a dedicated Strange New Worlds booth (#3529). Little more is known about the booth at this point but we can expect some kind of interactive event. Perhaps similar to the booth seen recently in London at MCM Comic Con?

The team from Hero Within, legendary for their Trek merchandise will also be on the show floor. You can find them at booth #1943 where they’ll have plenty of Trek hoodies and jackets on sale to complete your Starfleet look. But that’s not all!

They will also be hosting a special activation outside the convention centre. The “intimate Star Trek-themed experience” will give fans a “chance to relax, recharge and connect with fellow Trekkies” with Trek-themed coffee drinks. The lounge will feature a display of the Trek merchandise along with additional Star Trek promos from IDW Publishing, RockLove Jewelry, and the Star Trek Cruise. The Energize Lounge will be located at 332 J Street in the Gaslamp just one block from the Convention Center, open Thursday through Sunday 8 AM to 10 PM PT.

Moderator Tony B Kim (Hero Within, Crazy 4 Comic Con) leads this fun and helpful discussion with Star Trek pros Giraffe (Strange New Podcast), Myrriah Gossett (Star Trek Discovery Podcast), and Clyde Haynes (Star Trek Discovery Podcast).

It’s Alive, Jim! Evolutionary Biology in Star Trek
    Thursday July 20, 2023 8:00pm – 9:00pm PDT in Room 28DE
Did you ever wonder if giant space jellyfish could ever realistically be a thing? Could our parasites evolve to take over Starfleet Command? Or computers be reprogrammed by sentient yeast? Would aliens really just look like us with pointy ears or ridge noses? Since the beginning of Star Trek, exploring strange new worlds has been synonymous with meeting fascinating new species—friendly or less friendly . . . Star Trek shows us life as we know it and as we’ve never seen it before, and examining the science behind both can teach us a lot about where we come from, where we’re going, and what we might meet—out there. Dr. Ashley Poust (paleontologist at the San Diego Natural History Museum), Dr. Danielle de Carle (researcher and lecturer at the University of Toronto), and Dr. Amanda Jack (biochemist and biophysicist at SyntheX) take a deep dive into the reality, the fiction, and the possibilities of this Trek-tastic biology these last 56 years.
