Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is currently filming and both James Wan and Jason Momoa are not holding back in regards to teasing us fans. Not long ago we had our first look at a transformed Orm who resembles Tom Hanks’ character from Cast Away. What does it mean? Well, we had a few ideas. But before that image was shared, Aquaman himself blessed us with an image of his new Aquaman suit.
Last week, Jason Momoa took to Instagram to share his brand new costume for Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. As expected, it got everyone talking. Mainly because it wasn’t what we expected.
The first Aquaman gave us a phenomenal representation of Aquaman’s classic suit. We didn’t think it was possible to make it work but they absolutely nailed it. So what does this deviation mean?
It’s safe to assume that Arthur’s classic suit will make an appearance. Along with his new trident of course. But something clearly happens. While it is just a costume preview, we think it’s important to note that Aquaman is trident-less. It may mean nothing. Or it could be a hint. Perhaps the journey to The Lost Kingdom requires stealth? or maybe Aquaman’s new foe is stronger than we think… Maybe his trident is lost and his suit is destroyed.
While the costume itself is a stark contrast to the more traditional suit, there are some similiarities. Such as the belt which has Aquaman’s logo on it and a very similar structure. There are also small scale-like details on the body of the suit which gives it that deep sea vibe. So this suit definitely originates from Atlantis and looks to serve some sort of purpose. Think back to the first film. The reveal of the classic suit played a very big role in the marketing as well as the overall hype. Ditching those classic colours is quite a big risk. But there’s a reason for it. A reason that is currently shrouded in mystery.
Superhero costume changes are part of the process. But usually they are slight tweaks. Look at Thor, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, and even Iron Man. There are very subtle differences in regards to colour and sometimes structure- especially for Iron Man. But to completely abandon the original concept? That isn’t random. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom could have very big plans for Arthur and we’ve just received a subtle taste. Perhaps with more on the horizon, especially with DC FanDome just around the corner.

It’s safe to assume that this won’t be the last tease we receive while the cast and crew film, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more goodies. Aquaman 2 is currently set to debut in theatres on December 16, 2022.
