Review
For any 90s kids out there turn your eyes here, The Big Con is a celebration of all things 90s all in it’s bright and cheesy glory in a point and click adventure style format.
You play as Ali Barlow, a fiery young teenager with attitude by the bucket load, who helps her Mum out in the video shop (oh how my heart aches for the video shops) spending your days sorting shelves and rewinding, overhearing a conversation with her mum and loan sharks Ali takes it on herself to help out by raising funds and I don’t mean in the traditional sense as a chance meeting with the local grifter turns Ali’s head to a life of petty crime.

The game takes its inspiration from 90s pop culture with references throughout, the graphical style is colourful and funky in a lighthearted comic style with an over the shoulder viewpoint. Controls are pretty straight forward in a point and click sense with general movement using the analogue sticks.
Communication with other characters is an essential part of the storyline/gameplay as you are given tasks and information through talking to different people, the only draw back for me is the audio doesn’t match the speech for example you will have a speech bubble saying something like “I was looking for you” but the sound would be “who hoo” so doesn’t really go which can be a bit odd.
The different tasks are varied and plentiful and to be fair are quite funny and enjoyable but not really a game I’d see myself spending hours getting lost into but certainly good to have in the collection for a bit of a nostalgic laugh.
Graphically I think they’ve got it spot on with a kind of retro cartoon vibe going on, if you of the 80/90s era like myself then you will enjoy going about the game world and seeing the little references it’s very well thought out.
Verdict
A decent fun game, good nod to the golden 90s, recommended if you are looking for a nostalgia fix, probably not a game I’d look at for longevity but good to have in the collection for a bit of a laugh.
