Disney+’s Ahsoka series entered production just under four months ago. Despite going into production, it’s amazing just how little we know about the series. However, today delivered some incredibly exciting and promising news. Now, during a period of mass speculation it was rumoured that Aladdin‘s Mena Massoud would be playing the lost Jedi. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter Eman Esfandi has joined the cast of Ahsoka as Ezra Bridger who first appeared in Star Wars: Rebels.
The last time we saw Ezra Bridger, voiced by Taylor Gray, was in the season finale of Star Wars: Rebels. Utilising his connection through the Force, Ezra uses the Purrgil, sentient whale-like creatures that could navigate hyperspace, to get rid of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn and Ezra are plunged into hyperspace and are left stranded somewhere amongst the stars…
Since season 2 of The Mandalorian confirmed that Thrawn was alive and well, it suddenly became obvious that Ezra also survived. At that point, we knew that it was only a matter of time before we’d see Ezra on the screen once more. While plot details are currently unknown, the series could focus on the hunt to find Ezra and end Thrawn who is currently thriving in the chaos of the Empire’s demise.
Esfandi’s credits include a brief role in Will Smith’s King Richard, Robert Rodriguez’s horror film Red 11, and an upcoming military dara called The Inspector which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this week.
Currently, the Disney+ series stars Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ivanna Sakhno, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. Hayden Christensen is set to appear as Anakin Skywalker- This could be through flashbacks or through Anakin’s Force Spirit. Ray Stevenson has also joined the cast as a mysterious villain. As of right now, we don’t know who is playing Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Ahsoka is being written by Star Wars legend and Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni. John Favreau will serve as an executive producer alongside Filoni. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s co-director Peter Ramsey is directing one episode of the series, however it is currently unclear who will be helming the other episodes.
With the series still in production, and probably nearing the end of film, it’s likely that we’ll get more news within the coming weeks. Tomorrow’s D23 panel could be quite a big one as it is expected to include a first look at a bunch of upcoming Star Wars projects. This could include a trailer, or even some casting announcements.
We’ll be sure to keep you posted, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled as D23 hits. We could be in for quite the treat.
