Spider-Man

Bob Iger discusses SPIDER-MAN remaining in the MCU

On Friday we brought you the breaking news that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios had struck a deal for Spider-Man to remain in the MCU.

Now Disney CEO Bob Iger has weighed in on what this means going forwards in a tweet which declares the “feud” between the studios as over.

Iger also thanks Sony for remaining at the table and discussing the fact negotiations have been ongoing behind the scenes.

It is said the new Spider-Man deal gives Disney a larger share of the box office. Sony still gets 75% of the film’s box office receipts, whilst Disney will get 25% and contribute 25% of the budget.

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will hit theaters on July 16, 2021.

Birds of Prey (Warner Bros.)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead talks Huntress in BIRDS OF PREY

There’s every chance this week will mark the debut of the first full length trailer for Birds of Prey. With both Joker arriving in cinemas and New York Comic Con taking place this week there’s ample opportunity for Warner Bros. to release a trailer.

Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead recently sat down with The Wrap and talked turned to the character of Helene Bertinelli/Huntress.

“She’s kind of an odd character,” said Winstead. “She’s weird, and funny and awkward. You sort of get to tell this story of this girl who grew up training to be an assassin and didn’t ever have friends, and doesn’t know how to fit in socially, and doesn’t really know anything other than how to kill.”

“We got to sort of play around with that in ways that are in ways that were both sort of sometimes disturbing and sometimes really funny,” continued Winstead. “To get to play with that kind of a character was a really great opportunity.”

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. The movie will be directed by Cathy Yan and arrives in cinemas on February 7, 2020.

Titans (DC Universe)

TITANS S02E04 “Aqualad” review

Titans returns from hiatus with an episode struggling to move on from the past and embrace its future.

Synopsis

Four years ago, Dick, Donna, Hank & Dawn formed the Titans with Garth aka Aqualad. But the team is tested with the arrival of a new villain.

Review

Going in to “Aqualad” I had the distinct feeling we would be forgetting the present day narrative to explore a story in the Titan’s past. I had hoped the series had grown beyond the need to tell stories in one time period and instead jump between two – a la Arrow.

But alas that was not the case here.

Titans forgets all about Jason Todd’s current predicament with Deathstroke (Esai Morales) to jump backwards four years and fill in more of the back story as to the end of the first group of Titans.

Credit where credit is due however as Jamie Gorenberg (Shadowhunters) has crafted a self-contained story which is still vital to the on going narrative of season 2. “Aqualad” is certainly another very successful episode of Titans.

Where it succeeds is in fleshing out the much-swelled cast of characters. Whilst there are glimpses of a much happier Hank (Alan Ritchson) and our first proper time spent with Dick (Brenton Thwaites) and Dawn (Minka Kelly) as a couple, the episode really hones in on the titular character – played by Drew Van Acker – and Donna (Conor Leslie).

Plenty of Titans fans will cite Leslie/Donna Troy as a highlight in the cast. So to spend more time investing in her backstory was a brilliant idea at this stage in the season.

Watching Donna interact with Jillian (guest star Ann Magnuson – Panic Room) fleshed out her connection to Themyscira but also allowed us to see a more vulnerable and less self-assured side of her personality.

Leslie is able to show much more versatility in this episode as we see Donna go through the pain of heartbreak and happiness in the space of forty-seven minutes.

The episode hinges on her chemistry with Van Acker as Garth/Aqualad which, thankfully, is palpable on screen. Though his characterisation suffers from this one-time-only appearance. Garth feels updated to be more in line with Jason Momoa’s version of Arthur Curry/Aquaman which, although gives a wider connection to what is going on in live-action DC, does reduce his character’s impact on those around him. Aside from Donna.

Ultimately his appearance in this episode does feel frustratingly squandered. Having an original Titan from the comics reduced to a guest star seems a shame but that being said there’s still plenty of room for flashbacks prior to this story.

Van Acker does well with what he’s given to do in the episode. I was concerned there wouldn’t be much room in the budget for aqua-related-action but director Glen Winter (Arrow) is able to pull off a number of very cool action sequences including the character.

More importantly, despite his short runtime, there are still glimpses of strong bonds between the Titans themselves and his character doesn’t feel shoehorned in for the sake of a cameo.

This episode also introduces us to Jericho (Chella Man) although only in a very brief sense. There is clearly more flashback story to be told here but the episodes cliffhanger ending has us a little worried about just what happens next for the character.

Though the episode does break up the present day storyline, the excellent pacing and engaging story actually maintain the momentum of the season rather than interrupting it. Where season 1 Titans would go off on a tangent to tell us an unrelated story season 2 Titans is completely self-aware and working towards a much larger goal.

Verdict

Whilst “Aqualad” doesn’t necessarily make best use of its namesake the episode still provides an intriguing glimpse to a pivotal moment in the Titans past. Engaging and tense without impacting heavily on the season’s overall narrative.

8/10

Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Lucasfilm)

Empire Magazine debuts new THE RISE OF SKYWALKER image

Empire Magazine has debuted a new image from the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Presented without context we have Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and a number of Storm Troopers being blown backwards by something out of shot.

Ren’s gaze seems transfixed with whatever is causing the incident. Could it be Rey?

The accompanying quote from writer Chris Terrio alongside the image reads “When ren takes off his makes, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else.”

The film will see the return of Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), and Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix).

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), and Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) will also all return to reprise their iconic roles from previous films.

The late Carrie Fisher will appear via previously unreleased archive footage.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas December 20, 2019.

Angel (BOOM! Studios)

ANGEL (2019) #3 review

Angel #3 is available now where all good comics are sold!

Synopsis

Darkness has possessed another innocent…and Angel has no choice but to fight them. Trapped in an empty hospital with nowhere to go, Angel needs to find a way to save the host from this deadly and elusive demon, or have yet another life on his conscience. Will his new ally Fred Burkle be able to help him…or is she the reason he’s battling this monster in the first place? The next exciting chapter of the pop culture reimagining that made headlines worldwide continues from Bryan Edward Hill (Detective Comics, Killmonger), Gleb Melnikov and series creator Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s The Avengers).

Review

Angel is continuing to prove itself as one of the most compelling comics in BOOM! Studios roster with issue #3. Having already knocked it out of the part with its zero issue and subsequent #1 and #2 now we find ourselves deep in the action as Angel faces his past and his future.

Writer Bryan Edward Hill is continuing the dual storylines as we seen further flashback moments mixed in with the present day storyline.

The story of the past remains, for much of this issue, the more high concept. It’s images feature more saturated colours as well as much more intense action scenes. This is where most of the blood and gore is as Angelus wreaks havoc across the globe.

But that’s not the only reason this flashback story exists. Where Buffy the TV series gave us small glimpses of the character across his four seasons on the show, here we’re getting to spend some solid time understanding just what kind of creature Angelus was.

It helps to punctuate the present day action as we have a much greater understanding of his motivations to atone for his past.

But that’s not to say there isn’t plenty going on in the present day as well. The introduction of Fred to story has helped cement that Angel won’t be following the continuity of the series. But this issue does also give us a much better idea about the direction it will be going.

Lilith has proven to be a very interesting foil for Angel. We’re still not sure which side she is on but here she certainly seems to be masterminding his direction of travel.

Her rather lofty amount of exposition gives us a sort of first meeting between Buffy and Angel as well as predicting a rather bleak future for Willow. All this and then we get the amazing image of Angel’s body melting away as he goes after the villain of the piece.

It’s excellent writing and paired with some incredibly imagery that I could gush about for hours.

Gleb Melnikov’s art is simply perfect for Angel. It’s dark and shadowy but laden with excellent fine detail in background and facial expressions. The colours by Gabriel Cassata seem perfectly chose to amplify the visuals and it creates a perfect storm of conditions for the vampire with a soul.

Angel never looked or read so well.

Verdict

Angel continues a groundbreaking opening arc which is revolutionising the character and the wider Buffyverse as a whole.
