The weekend numbers are in and ‘Logan’ is off to an impressive start. Studio estimates put the film at $65-$70M at the North American box office and around $237M worldwide. Well the numbers are in and 20th Century Fox will sleep easy tonight!
First up the North America numbers. After a $33M, including $9.5M from Thursday previews, the film went on to gross $85.3M across the weekend. Saturday came in a $31.3M million taking only a short drop from Friday. Sunday capped off the weekend with $21.3M. That puts the film well ahead of the $53.1M weekend made by the last film ‘The Wolverine’ and slightly ahead of $85M made by ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ back in 2009.
For those counting records that’s the highest opening weekend for an R-rated movie released in March.
‘Logan’ also had a great opening weekend across the globe to the tune of $152M. The film has so far opened in 81 international markets. The top international markets were China ($46.3M), the UK ($11.4M), South Korea ($8.2M), Brazil ($8.17M), Russia ($7.1M), France ($6M), Australia ($5.9M) and Mexico ($5.3M). ‘Logan’ is now Fox’s third biggest international opening of all time only trailing ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ ($172M) and ‘Avatar’ ($164M).
Worldwide that means the film currently sits at $237M. Not bad for an R-rated movie and 17 years after Jackman first played the role of Wolverine. Look out for our review of ‘Logan’ coming this week.
