The Prince returns: Fables Vol. 3
Meet prince charming or maybe its better you don’t. Just like everything else in fable town people are not all that they appear to be.
Prince Charming or Charming as he goes by these days, due to the unfortunate situation that happened to him and all of the Fables in which he lost his land and title making him dirt broke; has three ex-wives – Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
Fables vol. 3 is all about romance, the heart beating head over heels rush and the bitter revenge seeking all-consuming emotions. You can’t have romance without a prince, Prince Charming to be exact and his three ex-wives. This volume explores their relationships individually and as a group – the dirty past and bitter present. Yet there might still be a chance of romance for one of charming’s ex-wives…… just not with him.
The plot continues on from the previous volumes with the Fabletown council hunting for the person who attempted to kill Snow on the farm and who lead the revolution – all evidence is pointing to Bluebeard and Goldilocks. As Snow and Bigby hunt down a clue on Goldilocks, they end up deserted in a middle of the woods with no memory of what happened. A perfect setting for some romance don’t you think…..meanwhile Charming currently seeking refuge with his most recent ex-wife sleeping beauty, sets into motion a plan to get his title back.
The murder mystery/ crime narrative style continues throughout this volume, with new characters introduced and old characters’ past revealed. Bill Willingham style is once again obvious throughout and the artist style continues as the famous duo Mark Buckingham and inked by Steve Leialoha team up again to produce a striking comic.
Volume three is the best of the Fables series so far, full of honest human emotions and experiences to do with love, the hardest of them all to depict honestly through words and illustrations, told by fairy tale characters who were all meant to live happily ever after. This volume only touches the tip of the iceberg on these characters and who they truly are. Another great volume that keeps you wanting more.
Up next…..Fables Vol. 4
