Overnight DC Universe series Swamp Thing has added a new villain and two heroes to its cast.
Firstly it has been announced that Will Patton (Halloween) as lead villain Avery Sunderland. It was announced last week that Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen had been cast as Sunderland’s wife Maria.
Deadline‘s reports this take on Sunderland “serves as the de facto patriarch of his Louisiana hometown, always giving back to the community. His benevolent veneer, however, masks a ruthless determination to harness the power of the swamp for profit.”
Further to that announcement DC Universe broke the news that the titular Swamp Thing has been cast. Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) has been cast to take on the role of the monstrous title character. Power‘s Andy Bean has been cast as Alec Holland who is described as “Passionate biologist Alec Holland is caught in the crosshairs of a small town nightmare when he discovers a bizarre local illness may be connected to his work in the swamp. Holland’s discovery leads him into conflict with dark forces, from which he emerges as the elemental hero known as Swamp Thing.”
The series is set to go in to production early in 2019.

When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
Swamp Thing will premiere on the DC Universe streaming service sometime in 2019/20. The series is set to star Virginia Madsenas Maria Sunderland, Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu, Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane and Maria Sten as Liz Tremayne.
