Ready Player One

Ready Player One has opened to a strong $181.2m worldwide. Topping the North American box office the film met early expectations with a moderate $53.2m over the four-day holiday weekend. It’s three day tally sits at $41.2m.

For those who love to know the stats that is the fifth largest Easter weekend opening of all time. It is also the largest opening weekend for a Spielberg helmed movie since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That film opened to $100m a decade ago in 2008.

Internationally, Ready Player One has so far opened in 62 markets. The film performed strongly over the weekend bringing in a healthy $128m. Leading the pack was, of course, China with the largest opening weekend for a Warner Bros. film ever in the territory with an estimated $61.7m. The film also brought in an estimated $8.1m in South Korea along with  $7.3m here in the UK, $6.1m in Russia, $6m in France, $4m in Mexico, $3.1m in Spain and Italy, and $2.2m in Brazil.

Looking ahead, the film is still to open in Germany (Thursday, April 5) followed by Japan on April 20.

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Ready Player One is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Owen Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, Simon Pegg as Ogden “Og” Morrow, Mark Rylance as James Donovan Halliday/Anorak, T.J.
