Hot off the press THR has learnt that Joss Whedon has exited the Batgirl movie. Announced last year Whedon was to write and direct the film which would finally see the Bat-family-on-film expand.
“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” said Whedon in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s been roughly a year since the news first broke of Whedon’s involvement with the character. It was around the same time that Whedon stepped in to complete Justice League. It’s no stretch to think that Whedon’s work with DC Films was impacted by the reaction to that movie.
According to reports earlier this week Batgirl is a huge priority for the studio so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Speaking of his exit and his colleagues at DC Joss was typically humble and frank all in the space of one sentence.
“I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?'”
