Long-time X-Men movie producer Lauren Schuler Donner has been updating the press on their slate of movies. The producer was on hand at the Television Critics Association press tour panel for FX’s Legion when she was asked about the state of movies such as New Mutants, Gambit and Kitty Pryde.
Donner confirmed that she is “hopeful” New Mutants will get the theatrical release it deserves following rumours it may get a Hulu release.
“I’m being told yes,” Donner told CinemaBlend. “As I say, I took a step back, so that was under Simon [Kingerg]’s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea, we started off as more of a team kind of movie, and the decision came to make it more of a horror film. I think it’s a good idea. I want to see it released. I’m hopeful that it will. I’d hate to see it thrown aside.”
Discussing the possibility of Gambit continuing to move forward with development, Donner said, “That is up to Disney, that is really up to Disney. I hope so, but that’s up to them. The problem is, you cannot have too many Marvel X-Men superhero movies out there, otherwise we will cancel each other out. Each one has to be distinctive and yet you’ve got the Avengers to follow through, you’ve got so many distinctive story canons to follow through and yet you want new ones. But I don’t think you can have more than four – four is a lot, cause people are gonna get sick of them, so we have to be careful. He has to be careful, Kevin.”
Finally, speaking of those movies currently known to be in development, Donner said these are now fully in the hands of Feige and the team at Disney.
“This is all now in Disney’s playground and they get to decide,” she said. “At least we know it’s in good hands, everybody’s worked really hard up til now on our Fox side, but now it’s gonna be Disney’s call.”
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is being directed by Simon Kinberg. James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender are confirmed to return to the roles of Charles Xavier, Mystique and Magneto respectively. Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munnm Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee will also return.
New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Alice Braga. The film is directed by Josh Boone from a screenplay by Boone and Knate Lee. Production credits go to Simon Kinberg, Lauren Schuler Donner and Karen Rosenfelt.
