Shazam! is now in cinemas and that means we’re already beginning to see box office information rolling in from across the globe.
Warner Bros. has announced the movie reached $16M on its opening day in China, the studios third largest opening day in the market. That figure trails behind on Batman v Superman and Aquaman proving DC has a strong presence in the market.
Overseas the movie has so far grossed around $16M. This estimate was released by the studio prior to the China update so we can safely assume the movie was around $32-35M heading in to Saturday.
Estimates have the movie grossing around $100-$120 from international markets over the weekend. By close of play Sunday the movie will have opened in 53 markets with only Japan left to open on April 19.
So far Shazam! has bowed at no. 1 in 48 of those 53 markets so a strong start all round for the Warner Bros./New Line release.
Domestically earl estimates had placed the movie at $4-4.5M for Thursday previews. That figure surged to $5.9M on Friday following late night ticket sales. Adding in the figure from the early paid previews and Shazam! bowed to around $9.2M before Friday.
Estimates are now rolling in around $20M for Friday with the movie on course to gross somewhere in the region of $51-56M for the full weekend.
We’ll keep you updated across the weekend.
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Shazam! also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”). Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Djimon Hounsou (“This is Us”) as the Wizard.
Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are serving as executive producers.
