Put this one firmly in your rumour pile. Following the news that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is first in line to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 many fans have been asked: what happened to Gavin O’Connor?
O’Connor was originally set to write and direct the movie. He’s spoken openly about the film as recently as just a couple of months ago. But now it seems he quietly exited the film over similarities between his script and the Birds of Prey movie which enters production in early 2019.
Variety‘s own Justin Kroll has been hearing the same rumour and tweeted fans last night to update on the news:
On the Gavin O'Connor front in relation to SS2, hearing the story he had for the sequel ended up almost being identical to the BIRDS OF PREY story and when that film was given the go ahead to go before SQUAD 2, O'Connor grew frustrated and fell off project to do HAS BEEN instead
