Black Panther

UPDATE: the official figures have now been released and Black Panther performed even better than we could have hoped. The official figures for the three-day weekend in North America has risen to $202m!

With the Monday estimate of $33m that means that the four-day holiday weekend opening is approximately $235m. This is an unprecedented success for a solo entry in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The worldwide gross is now estimated at $404m.

At first he was tracking for a $100m opening weekend, then $150m and then $200m. It seems that Black Panther has become an unstoppable juggernaut at the box office and now we have the opening weekend numbers to back it up.

The latest Marvel Studios movie bowed with a massively impressive $192m over the three-day weekend in North America. It’s worth noting it’s a holiday weekend in the states with the four-day forecast looking to be around the $218m mark.

$192m is officially the second largest opening in the MCU in North America, behind only The Avengers ($207.4m) and topping the $191 million debut of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Internationally the film has also proved a hit making $169m across 48 global markets. Openings in China, Japan and Russia are still to follow in the coming weeks.

Globally that makes for a total opening weekend of approximately $316m! Congratulations to Ryan Coogler, Chadwick Boseman and the whole Marvel Studios crew on the success of this film. We’ll be bringing you our review later this week.
